Any Mods?
« on: December 20, 2011, 01:20:13 am »
Is there anybody else out there into the mod scene?  Admittedly a big part of it is fashion, but it also has some of the best music out there.  there seems to be a real revival of soul and funk out there, some of my favourite new artists:

Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings
Charles Bradley
Amy Winehouse (rip)
Alice Russel
The Like
Franz Ferdinand
Kinoko Hotel
Osaka Monaurail
The Ballantynes
Chains of Love
and many more

I am not into the Mod scene but I can recommend a good band that kicked off the whole Mod Revivial: The Jam.

Another good song is "Going Underground". The guy's name is Paul Weller rather than Peter.

The mod scene did not start with The Jam, they just made it hip again in the late 70's.  It actually began in the early 60's with acts like The Who and The Kinks.

I like both bands as well as The Jam.  :)

I have an ecletic taste for music, and actually i've been attending some special mod parties that are taking place in Lisbon and I have had a great time!
In the end everything will be ok. If not, that's not the end

So I was reading this thread and was struck with the question, "What the heck is a mod anyway?"  :56789

The mentions of the '60s and '70s placed it in the realm of prehistory for me -- pre-me that is -- so I thought I'd have a look in, where else, wikipedia -- hardly authoritative but a good place to start.

Mods seemed to like scooters of all things.  Wow,  just goes to show that our current generation wasn't the first to fall victim to the advertisers.  Scooters! :909   Loved the mod justification for amphetamine use -- idiots!

While looking through the wiki article on mods I took the detour into rockers and found out something else I didn't know -- cafe racers.   Huh, never heard of them before but now that I've looked at how they were set up I finally know what my dad meant when he and my granddad were discussing handlebars for their old Triumph motorcycle -- it was most definitely not a cafe racer.

Mods & rockers and their music -- turns out I've been listening and dancing to it most of my life without having any idea about all the baggage that went with it.

Very educational!

Thanks for a great thread.   :63424

I've always liked the Mod ethos:

"Clean living under difficult circumstances."

No matter what you make the effort to look sharp, be sharp.

and nothing speaks louder of clean living than getting all jacked up on amphetamines and touring down to the seaside for a three-day running battle with the rockers.   :234567  Very cool!  Not!

On the up side they did seem to have half decent sense of fashion -- except for the dorky scooters of course.

Blaspemy! :234567

I love the scooters, I just can't afford one right now, and in these straightened times a very practical mode of transportation.

As for the emphatimes, well all I need to stay up all night dancing is a bit of gin and some good music
