« on: August 18, 2011, 02:12:21 am »
In this thread, post good indy music you are listening to.

If the artists are signed with a major label, post in another thread.

I'll start.

Awesome! Glad to see an indie music thread. Although I feel indie doesn't really exist anymore, it's still relevant since the rule is any artist that isn't on a major label.

Lately, I haven't been able to stop listening to the new Atlas Sound album, Parallax. This is his 3rd proper album from Bradford Cox's solo project, not including the 3 volumes of bedroom demos he released last year in 2010. Bradford's wide influences can be heard through most of Atlas Sound ranging from 60's girl groups, bands like The Velvet Underground and My Bloody Valentine. Even current bands and artists like Stereolab and Bjork.

Parallax mos def has all those elements from previous Atlas Sound releases except this album has a more confident Bradford which adds to the beautiful soundscapes, melodies, and lyrics and their ability to get stuck in your head. If you haven't heard Atlas Sound before, Parallax is a great place to start and if it's your cup of tea, you can always dig into previously released albums.

Indie Music still exists, probably more than you realize, but you have to know where to look for it
The Underground scene is still alive and kicking

Is that not pretty much a trait inherently linked with indie works?

Yes and no
Metal bands, for example, who aren't signed up with a major label do of course not get the same amount of promotion as the popular bands do. But many Metal Music specialized Music magazines do give attention to them
That's what I meant with "you have to know where to look for it". There are many ways to discover new Indie bands, but in specialized sections (like magazines, websites, concerts and so on...)

Well, I recently stumbled upon this piece:
Dada Dumdums Faust

Not strictly a song, but more a recital set to a musical background, but still...
The song is attributed to the group "Dada Dumdums", and while I have not found it listed in their portfolio, I will take the uploader's word for it. As they do not have any publishing deal according to their profiles, I think they qualify as Indie.

Did some searching myself

Dada Dumdums is a Post-Punk project from Mainz, Germany. Founded in the spring of 1999.
They aren't even signed up with any record labels which makes them if not a "Indie" band definitely a "Underground" band.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/Dada-Dumdums/165387372361?sk=info

They have probably released an album on which you can find the song "faust". But I think if you want to buy or find that album you have to go to the merchandising stand on one of their concerts.
The only songs of them you can find in a record store/cd shop are the ones who were promoted on official compilation cd's by Goth magazines:

http://www.discogs.com/Various-Smoke-And-Spotlight-Vol-3/release/1301921

And the ones that can be found on their Myspace and Soundcloud profiles:

Well, I had already gotten as far as their profiles on various sites. And since the only songs I even saw mentioned were the ones displayed in their web player, I could not verify if this might be one of their other songs or a misattribution. Anyway, since I doubt that I will get into music far enough to be actively hunting down concerts of various bands, it is very well possible that the uploader's word is all I will ever have to know for sure, unless I could reliably compare it to the songs they published and identify the voice. Which I doubt I would be able to.

Well, if you compare the "Faust" song with this "Hourglass" song (which can also be found on the 2 compilation cd's) you can hear it is the same singer. (only difference is the language: German and English).
So I think the uploader is correct
But of course the "Faust" song can also be a song of another project of the Dada Dumdums singer
I will find out, but don't know if it is goïng to be today

Well, it is comparable enough to lend credibility, but not certainty. Anyway, why care, it is not going to change anything and there seems to be nothing actively contradicting their involvement, so this scepticism is largely unnecessary I guess.

Back to indie Music

While beïng a member of the very successful band Soft Cell, Dave Ball had to turn to a indie label (Some Bizarre) for releasing his first solo album In Strict Tempo (1983).
The song with the same name as the album (In Strict Tempo, featuring vocals by Gavin Friday of the Virgin Prunes) is till today one of the most played classics at (underground) New-Wave/Goth parties

I am starting to get confused about "indie", actually. I mean, Nuclear Blast is not owned by a major company or a RIAA member, so it classifies itself as independent, but with their share of the Metal market, I do not really think they qualify.
