Last time I was on vacation, I passed the time with a big chemistry textbook. But that is just me being a nerd.

Depends what your into.
Some of my favs I've read on the Hols-
Graham Greene - Our Man in Havana
Any Terry Pratchett is good (apart from 'Nation' IMO)
I adore PG Wodehouse he is a light funny read and perfect for a beach day although some may struggle with the 1920's-30's language.
if your into history and want a book on London I would say read 'London: The Biography' by Peter Ackroyd. Its a biggie you'll be on the beach for more than a day lol.
Hope this gives you some ideas. Although these are ones I'd probably take.

If you're looking for inspiration, try anything from Thoreau - I just finished "Walking," and I recommend that if you want a short read. It was written in the 1800s, so the language is a little dense, but beautiful and accessible nonetheless.
