Does any one else like to collect coins?
« on: July 15, 2012, 06:00:50 am »
I've been collecting coins ever since my dad showed me his collection about ten years ago. My current goal is to complete a Dansco 7070 - it's a collection where you need one of every type of coin that the US has ever minted. It can be quite expensive, but I'm getting mostly circulated samples. Anyways, I was just curious if any of you guys were into that too.

That's interesting, I don't really collect them as such, but there are one or two unusual ones I've found in change and keep in a special bag.  Some you see in museum collections are really detailed or have special shapes or square holes in the middle.

I have started collecting Greek Euro coins whenever I come across them. Soon-to-be limited edition

You should extend your list. It's PIIGS, not only G. :undecided:
I started collecting all Euro coins from its start in 2002, but that's probably sth. I'm not alone with... Stupidly I did not hold DM, I'd be pleased to have a set. From past days I still have many different coins from all over the world, e.g. Thailand, Peru, Iceland or also the US. And old bank notes from the Great Depression: 100 Billion Marks. Whoohoo, I'm a billionaire!!! If it comes to this again, I'm prepared. :34567

Well, Italian and Spanish coins are pretty widespread in circulation all over the EU, though you might have a point about Portugal. However, Greece is currently the center of attention in the economic situation.

My type set is mostly from circulation. I've recently bought Mercury dimes, an Indian Head Cent, a Buffalo nickel, a Walking Liberty Half, and a Morgan dollar. I'm still working on the 20th century.

My most interesting circulation find is a 1943 steel penny!

If an interesting coin comes along, I will usually put it away and try to find out more about it when I have some free time. Not that I have run across a lot off coins that fit that description.

I was doing that too for awhile. Now I mostly just inherit interesting coins from family and happenstance.

I used to enjoy it when I was younger. I was really into history, and collecting coins provided a tangible connection to the past. I liked to think about who might have spent the coin, what they bought with it, where it had been.

I collect British 50p coins. A new set came out for the London Olympics but I'm not sure how many different faces were produced. At Picaddilly railway station in London they were selling them for £3.50 each. It's been more fun and less expensive to get the family involved - we have all been checking our change. I probably have the set now, or near as dam it.

I know they are worth at least 50p each.

The American National Park Quarters series has started to come out and I'm attempting to collect them. I've seen the Vicksburg and Arcadia quarters.

I got started in it years ago. I have some older coins, actual silver dimes, liberty & indian nickels. I collect alot from foreign countries. My wife works with a bunch of international students, so they bring her LOTS of coins, and stamps. The professors also bring them since they know I also collect coins.

O my goodness, those are some beautiful pieces!  Whenever I open my lock-box next, I'll have to take some pictures for y'all.  I have a bit of old paper money, and my new favorite is a piece of old American numismatic gold!
