Star Wars VII
« on: November 04, 2012, 12:49:39 am »
The other day Disney purchased Lucasfilm for over $4 billion. Disney also announced that a new Star Wars trilogy is going to be released starting in 2015.  I just hope that the sequel trilogy isn't as bad as the first two prequels.

If Lucas doesn't have anything to do with the movie, it might be good.

Bad news I'm afraid, even though for the new movies Lucas will only be an "Executive Creative Consultant" (Similar to Gene Rodenberry's role in the Star Trek movies from Wrath of Khan onwards) the new movie is based on an original story written personally by George Lucas   Hopefully more competent writers will overhaul, what undoubtedly is a shitty script, and an actual decent Star Wars movie can be made in my lifetime.

That's what happened with the originals too. They were shitty script that got improved by others. The prequels suck because nobody dares to tell Lucas to his face when he writes stuff that sucks.

Unfortunately, Disney don't have much of a reputation for good sci-fi films.

Anyone see their recent huge flop "John Carter"?

That may be true, but then look upon it's other live action films such as the Avenger's. That was amazing.

I can imagine these going quite well, if they can use Marvel.

I really don't like this at all.  It was bad enough prequels were made to what was already a great trilogy, I fear adding more onto it will just add more fuel to the fire.  Then you have to consider there have already been books written about what happened after ROTJ and a whole other saga has developed from there.  Does Disney change it completely?  As what's been spoken in the Star Wars saga "I have a bad feeling about this".

I feel like Disney couldn't do much worse to the franchise than the Star Wars prequels, so why not give them a shot? I mean, Jar Jar Binks was basically a bad Disney character anyway...

That's kind of how I feel.  I've stopped getting excited for sequels or remakes of pretty much any movie, because it's not going to be the same.  The movie will be made to appeal to modern audiences, and thus will be different than the audience of the original.

But I mean, it might turn out well.  My favorite two Star Wars movies are the ones Lucas didn't direct (Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi).

The prequel are nothing compared to the Christmas special. It's not so bad it's good it's unbearably bad. I couldn't watch more than 5 minutes.

Lucas has proven to be a great idea man, like Walt Disney was.  He's at his best when coming up with an idea and giving it to a great writer/director as he did in the original trilogy sequels and the Indiana Jones franchise.  When he starts thinking he can do it all it falls apart.

I dunno. I'm cautiously optimistic, but only if it continues the narrative along the lines of all the novels that followed. A Rogue/Wraith Squadron military sci-fi spinoff would be epic, as would a Corran Horn 'I, Jedi'-style film, but if they're gonna reboot all that I just don't know if I'll be able to watch it.
