The sound of Christmas
« on: December 22, 2012, 08:57:00 pm »
Delta and I after sharing some songs discovered that we are used to very different Christmas music, enough that we wouldn't recognize each other's music as sounding like Christmas if we weren't told.

So this thread is to share what Christmas sounds like wherever you live.

I'm skipping the US imports and let the US members post them.

So here are some Christmasy songs in Quebec.

Traditional German (including other German-speaking countries) Christmas songs include world famous songs like "Silent Night, Holy Night"

or "O Christmas Tree".

Furthermore, there are also many songs that are not that popular as exports:

There are also less liturgical songs, but they are rare, the only one I can think of from the top of my head is this song, which is set to a tune that is supposedly of English origin, but without documented lyrics or something of that sort:

Please send me a message on the forum before contacting me over IM. For best results, also mention what you want to talk about, I am not much of a smalltalker.

Thanks for those, I enjoyed listening to many of them in full.  I think the last one is based on 'Deck the halls', a traditional English one.  Here it is in a cute Disney animation:

Another classic from olden times is called 'Past Three O'Clock'.  Actually I thought it was Victorian, but I've just found it was actually first published in the 1920s.

So, those are my contributions.  There are many others, of course, like the Wassail Song and We Wish you a Merry Christmas.  I like the verse about the figggy pudding.  I've never tried some but it sounds good! :D

I might be odd but I tend to make a distinction between Christmas songs and songs that have somewhat of a christmas theme.   Songs like Silent Night, Good King Wenceslaus, The first Noel are all examples of Christmas songs..   here in the states we also have some songs like " Please daddy don't get Drunk this christmas"  and "grandma got run over by a reindeer" that I DONT   :324   consider Christmas songs in spite having a Christmas theme......just sayin

I think that The theme is completely irrelevant. What makes them Christmas songs is that they are played year after year during Christmas time.

Maybe just the languages are different and the basis melodies are the same, but i let you with 2 tradittional songs

"The Child Is Sleeping" kids version, more humouristic video and a formal version ahead

"Merry Christmas for all"

And in the end I could not resist to link a group of singers in the street. In opposition of what says in the legend, the song they are singing is traditional "after Christmas songs" that originally would announce the joy of Jesus's born. Perhaps is just sung in a small area of the country, so is not known and its purely folk inspiration. The people usually give some Christmas's sweets or offer some money for the effort   Anyway it's fun for everyone, I think.
