I don't practice mma myself but I watch a lot of mma on tv. UFC, K1, Bamma etc.

I did Aikido for several years, I too wish I had gotten into it a younger age. I also watch UFC, although I liked it more back in the day when they pitted different styles against each other.

They still do that now. Only difference is that the athletes are more rounded and have experiance and talent in all forms of martial-arts

I agree. They're still specialists but they know how to fight in whatever style is necessary. I think it makes it more interesting as you get more of a fight than a wrestler owning a kick-boxer.

I would agree and disagree. In my opinion, MMA is exactly what its called, Mixed Martial Arts. A combination of skill sets, designed to be the most efficient in the octagon. Looking at the current line up of champions, a wrestler with good boxing seems to be the most efficient means of winning. i.e gsp, bones jones, cain valesquez, Benson henderson, etc. Generally yes, most fighters start with one strong skill set and add others along the way. However, most gyms these days advertise MMA classes, a lot of newer, younger fighters are being brought up learning pure MMA as its own discipline.
What I was referring to, in my previous post, was how I enjoyed watching two different styles, clash. When the UFC tournaments started it was one discipline against another, so it answered the age old question, which fighting style is the best. We learned real quickly that Jiu-jitsu was the king of disciplines in a one vs one scenario.  However, we also learned as the sport progressed into what it is today, that MMA is generally better than pure Jiu-Jitsu (see the Gracie vs Hughes fight.)
The UFC we watch to today is certainly a better offering to the main stream viewer. And yes, no one likes watching a wrestler lay' n' pray. All I meant was that as someone who is fascinated by all the different combat styles, the older tournament style was more intriguing to me. Either way, its all fun to watch.

hi I have been doing bjj and mma for 4 years im a 2dree purple belt I love it. it is the most effective martial arts in the word today and it just grate :D

Back when I lived in Florida I will never forget the debacle that Kimbo Slice turned out to be.  Kimbo was from South Florida so everybody was buzzing about his UFC debut.  He had amassed an army of fans for his backyard brawler youtube videos and was supposed to fight UFC legend Ken Shamrock.  I think this was the first UFC fight ever shown on network TV.

Shamrock got injured while training and had to pull out at the last minute.  Relatively unknown fighter Seth Petruzelli stepped in.  Nobody expected Petruzelli to win as he was smaller than Kimbo and a total unknown.  But he was quick as a cat and took Kimbo down in the first 10 seconds of the match.



I remember watching that while bartending in Boca Raton and everybody was shocked.
