China: Sanya's nudist beach cause for debate

Many tourists have posted nude photographs while vacationing at Sanya's nudist beach in south China's Hainan Province, giving the Chinese public a vivid imagination of what happens at Sanya, Taiwan newspaper Want Daily reported.






The so called nudist beach lies on Da Dong Hai (Great East Sea) beach, is only three kilometers from Sanya. It has become increasingly common to see groups of people chatting and playing cards in the nude at the far end of the beach.

There is no sign posted to inform tourists that the area is for nudists, and there have been reports of embarrassing encounters between clothed and nude beach goers.


An internet user called "yilunanfeng" said that the beach used to be frequented by foreigners on vacation, but gradually more and more Chinese tourists took over the nudist beach.


Perhaps in a contest of traditional values, most of the naked sun bathers are middle-aged men.


"Yilunanfeng" advised that the local government should set up a notice to remind people that there is a nude beach here

 Its surprising to find out that this nude beach lies in China, but its also great that nudism is expanding to countries I've never thought it would reach!

My impression was that it was Taiwan (ROC) not PRC.

PRC actually, though not quite mainland. It is an island, though much closer to the mainland than Taiwan. The site that reported it runs a .cn-domain, after all.

Sanya, Hainan Island, Dadonghai Beach, north end: free Beach. This is reportedly China's only naturist site and quite public and touristy, every day some 500 Chinese and a few Euro nudists congregate here (as observed in Feb 2012). Naked children cavort all over this and all other Sanya beaches.

The article isn't totally correct though because I know for a fact that many hotsprings in rural china are enjoyed nude (apparently they don't count as "naturist sites"). Also there's a huge disconnect between the official party line and the reality of how Chinese live particularly in the rural areas of the interior. I'm guessing there are a lot of unofficial (out of the way) places that are used for naturism especially in the Chinese tropics and subtropics.
