All windows 8 licenses come with downgrade rights now :)  you can buy a windows 8 machine, give MS a quick ring and swap the license key for a valid win7 one :)  They even give you a link to download legitimate install media :)

There's a few problems with that.

Christine is very unlikely to move from her current laptop / Windows XP until she has no other choice and the offer might not be valid then.

And both installing from an iso and bypassing "secure" boot might prove challenging which is why I suggested finding a geek friend. :)

I currently have a Dell desktop with Intel quad core 2.4 ghz with 4 gigabytes of ram. Unfortunately it came with Windows Vista 32bit so I can't use all the Ram for windows. I was really angry at the time that the BIOS wasn't able to even read the full 4 gigabytyes even when run with 64 bit Linux. I complained, gave up, and then several months later they bought out a BIOS update that fixed the prolem. I bought it in 2008 and have since added a sound card, hard disk, graphics card etc. It's not longer good enough to run some of the new games coming out, although I have real trouble finding any games I'd even want to play any more. I'm looking to get a new computer sometime but performance hasn't really increased that much and I'm not running so many of my own experiments any more that require continuous processing for weeks on end.

When moving to Germany in August 2011 I bought myself a new laptop to replace the one I gave back to work. I went for a Toshiba. It's small and lightweight although it doesn't get much use. When it does though it's invaluable. I keep thinking I should have gone for the Sony instead because of the ergonomic feel.  After the absolute disaster of a previous Fujitsu-Siemans I'm rather cautious about laptops now and Toshiba have never let me down.

My laptop is a Macbook Pro 13", a reliable easy to use and portable computer which I am very happy with :)

As for my desktop...
4gb RAM
AMD Phenom II 3ghz CPU (which is currently running at 3.4ghz)
and a EVGA gtx 660 (non ti)
and a cooler-master CPU cooler (better than stock cooler)
for what it is it does quite well, can play most modern games at medium low settings at 60fps  (except planetside 2 and ArmA  )

But im thinking its time for an complete new computer, but I might wait for the next gen of GPU's and CPU's to come out before then  :undecided: :azn:

Yeah, it doesn't quite work that way. :-)

My advice is to keep the latest version of whatever browser is still compatible with XP, even if it means dropping your current one (if you're lucky Firefox will be the last to drop support), connect through a router so you have some firewall, keep a clone of your reinstall easily if it breaks and backups.

When the situation becomes untenable, switch to Windows 9 if it's decent or Linux otherwise.

When you get a fast computer install Windows XP in a VM that doesn't connect to the nert.

I've got an HP 2000 with Windows 8. I despise Windows 8 after just a few days of using it and I'd like nothing more than to put Ubuntu on this machine. Try though I might I can't get the LiveCD to load.

Well what the hell? Ubuntu is probably the most user friendly distro. Try the Ubuntu forums?

Actually, that kinda matches my experiences. Ubuntu is easy to use, but getting it to boot can be temperamental depending on your machine and the OS version.
Please send me a message on the forum before contacting me over IM. For best results, also mention what you want to talk about, I am not much of a smalltalker.
