Technical question about replies

Hi, I just wanted to know what form of notification system for replies to comments or topics there is.

I had a look through the FAQ and I couldn't find anything on the subject.
I got an email about replies on my intro but that was only after I'd gone to the topic myself after I saw it on the thread and noticed it had replies.
So I'm a bit confused right now...

Woah, I'm slow.  I just found the thing at the top where you can view all replies to topics.
