Books you should have read
« on: October 02, 2009, 10:23:45 pm »
What are the books you thought long ago you should read but still haven't?

Mine is Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter. I just placed an online reservation on it at the library of my district.

I was given that book as a gift a few years ago by a girl who thought I was very smart. Unfortunately she overestimated my intelligence. I got maybe halfway through it. It was not light reading. I really should finish it, some day. Then I should start it from the beginning again.

Is that to help you with your plan of world domination Stuart? ;-)

Hmm, there would be many books on my list, in fact there's a pile of several dozen books in my closet waiting to be read.

I just got it, read the intro and first chapter and it's absolutely fascinating!

What surprised me the most so far is that Babbage in the 1800s discovered meta-programming, without a proper computer to test it on. Today, if we have that particular bit of knowledge, it's because McCarthy rediscovered it in 1956 and today, not many programers can understand it. That Babbage discovered it is crazy!

By the way Stu, when are you going to read "How to Win Friends and Influence People"? :)

Rich Dad, Poor Dad is built on a bullshit story and full of unsound financial advices but it contains one good tip about becoming rich: write a bullshit story full of unsound financial advices and sell it.

1984 is one hell of a book, very highly recommended.

Edit: Long analysis of Rich Dad, Poor Dad: http://www.johntreed.com/Kiyosaki.html

1984 by George Orwell is required reading in German schools.

I personally find very good fantasy books.
At the moment I think it's thrilling fantasy epic Eragon, Volume 1 to 3 of the author Christopher Paolini fantastic.
I've been waiting quite excited about the 4th Tie.

I'd also like to add The Alchemist. I was required to read it for my Spanish class, the Spanish version of course, and never finished it because I got lost so quickly. Now all I hear are great reviews about this book, so I'm going to make a trip to the library soon :786

Left Behind by Tim Lahaye and Jerry Jenkins and The Giver by Lois Lowry. I love to read so asking me to pick only two books to recommend was quite difficult.
