"The Cook" by Martin Suter.

The Tamil cook Marvan helps with its aphrodisiac cuisine, couples have the problems. More and more affluent clientele expressed their interest, but Marvan is afraid that the cuisine is indecent. But he needed the money for his family in Sri Lanka suffers from poverty.

The book is very well written and very interesting, especially the attached recipes.

The fact that it is 50 years since the publication of Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird is a reminder to me that I have never read it...

I really wished that I had read books about how to draw cartoons when I was still a young child. I would have kept up with it and could have been really good by now.

Still ... it's fun catching up!

I think Don Quixote was the last classic literature I read and I gave up half way through. That must have been about 16 years ago though. I bought Catch 22 recently though and need to read that.

For the last year I've been catching up on the books that broaden my understanding of how the world works. History is good for this. I think it's a good idea to have a basic understanding of such things and not to assume that everything will carry on as usual for the rest of one's life.

Delivered today from amazon I have next to me "When money dies, the nightmare of the Weimar hyper-inflation". On the chest of drawers opposite me I have "Eating fossil fuels" and "Whoops! Why everyone owes everyone and no one can pay". I'm currently finishing off "The Long Emergency: Surviving the Converging Catastrophes of the 21st Century". I also need to read "The Guns of August" sometime.

I definitely recommend it!
Where The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings are actually one major story The Silmarillion is more a collection of short stories about the history of Middle Earth
If you are fascinated by the world created by John Ronald Reuel Tolkien this is the history book you definitely need to read

Never managed to get past the first few pages with that.

From what I remember it goes something like this:

There was someone called X (X is the hero), who was also known as Y by the dwarfs and Z by the Elves (OK, X == Z now, I can remember that) but whose real name was W (Sorry X == W). Y went on a big quest (Yay! The plot!) and then came back victorious (Oh ...) and later died. (So X, Z, W otherwise referred to as Y is not the hero?). But his son called A, who is known by the dwarfs as  ....

To read it it is best that you read The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings first so you know most of the Middle Earth characters which John Ronald Reuel Tolkien explains the history and origin of in The Silmarillion

Wolfboy, you mentioned the exact reason why I love the Silmarillion. I've read LOTR and enjoyed it. However the first time I read the Silmarillion I said was better than LOTR. Yes the place and character names get quite confusing at times, but I really enjoyed reading the events which led Tolkien's fantasy world to the way it is in LOTR.

Did you knew John Ronald Reuel Tolkien never finished The Silmarillion when he was alive?
The books was edited and published in 1977 by his son Christopher Tolkien, 4 years after the dead of his beloved father.
