2015 wish list: Nudist beach
« on: January 11, 2015, 11:31:32 pm »
Shock, horror: A clothing-optional resort on Chapman Road further north of the Sunset Beach carpark with access to a legal-nude section of beach over the sand dunes.

Four decades ago, the long sands just up from the existing beach carpark provided an unofficial and publicly-accepted skinny-dipping area (I know, I was there), but since then the prudes have gained the upper hand, and rarely can a “naughty bit” be seen.

As well, a new housing development just behind the dunes means more “textiles”— as the nudist movement describes those particular people — are coming onto the beach at that particular point, to be shocked for themselves and “what about the children?”

Geraldton is missing out on the tourism dollars which could come with the highly-mobile people, young, old or indifferent, who prefer holidaying in a clothing-free environment, which also offers opportunities for healthy exercise.

There are a few places in Perth where that can be done, one of them a fenced-in resort with a large swimming pool, tennis and volleyball courts, barbecue, cottage, motorhome, caravan and camping facilities.

There’s also the Scarborough Beach “clothes-free” area.

Nothing like that further north until you reach a legalised nude beach near Exmouth, or go all the way to Broome, where there is a legal-nude portion along the town’s beach.

A spot along Chapman Road, between the Sunset Beach carpark and Drummond Cove, fenced off for privacy, landscaped, pooled and courted, with caravan and motor home access for nudists. What a dream!

Screams of “that’ll attract perverts”, from people who have never been near a nudist resort, and don’t know those around Australia are regularly visited by individuals and families who are “just people” who simply don’t have a fixation about their bodies.

Fear not, it probably won’t happen until the great wheel of time turns and again rolls out the liberated views those old enough can recall from the 1960s and 1970s.

Meanwhile, Geraldton could at least make a start by designating and getting used to the idea of a legal-nude section further up Sunset Beach.
