Naked Boating,
« on: December 08, 2009, 02:39:53 am »

As the mercury drops in the northern latitudes, and those of us who
can't go south with the Sun, now bundle up to protect ourselves from
Old Man Winter's icy grip, let's turn our thoughts to warmer days and
places, and delve into the phenomenon of naked boating.  While some
wouldn't even consider boating nude due to modesty, and others
couldn't imagine letting their tender and dangly bits get anywhere
near a loaded block, line or winch, simply out of self preservation,
there are those for whom the magic and freedom of being out on the
water is made just that much better when they're doing it totally
naked.

When you ask around, you get different reasons.  Some simply say:
"Why wouldn't you strip off your clothes?  It's just you and the
ocean?"  Others claim they cruise in the nude to save on laundry.  For
these people it's (supposedly) a pragmatic issue, but for others,
there is a decidedly romantic angle to boating in the buff.  It does
seem that those who do it in the nude may cruise together for longer
than those who don't.  Please note that this is based on a completely
unscientific sampling of cruising couples, but feel free to quote us
if you, or a loved one, need a little extra encouragement.

Actually, naked boating isn't even rare.  If you ask around you'll
find that a fair number of the boating world is made up of stripping
sailors, unclad kayakers, disrobing divers, and others who enjoy naked
watersports.  Climate is a factor, of course, and so is the waterway.
Tropical sailors on the open ocean might be more comfortable than
someone who boats on a frigid, crowded lake.  For these folks, there
are holiday nudist cruises, crewed charters that specialize in going
au natural, and then of course, ahem... there's bare-boating!

According to a pale cruising lass we'll just call "Janet," sunscreen
is a necessity for naked daytime boating.  As her doctor told her:
"only use it where you want to avoid skin cancer."  So, particularly
if you're fair, and during the times of the day with high UV
(typically 1000hrs to 1600hrs local time), you may want to throw
something on just to avoid having to cover yourself head to toe with
sun block.  Failing to do one or the other can cause some serious
burns in places you REALLY don't want burned. And speaking of burns,
one cruiser told of being burned rather badly while cooking naked, so,
an apron is recommended when appropriate.

It's not just cruisers who take it all off when offshore.  Even famous
racing sailors like Sam Davies get naked when alone on long hot
passages. "In the tropics, when it’s really hot, it’s better to do
everything naked," says Sam. After all, when you're offshore, it's not
public nudity - it's about as private as you can get.  For ocean
rowers, getting nude is a matter of chafe, and the more clothes you
wear, the worse it gets.  Because of that, rowing naked is more the
rule than the exception.  Power boaters also disrobe, it is said, but
thus far the only evidence we've seen is on hip hop videos.

So, if you thought you were alone when boating naked, you aren't.
After all, the reason why so many shoreside, bayside and lakeside
homes have telescopes pointed down at the water is not to read sail
numbers, and nude sunbathers on deck and on shore could very well
drive the entire stabilized binocular market.  Historically?  Well, as
everyone knows, bare breasts appease Neptune and calm the seas, and
that's why figureheads are usually popping out of their bodices.  It
isn't hard to imagine that for hundreds - perhaps thousands - of
years, men (and women) have been saying something similar to:  "Honey,
I don't like the look of those clouds.  Why don't you take off your
clothes, and see if that helps?"

I had no idea that bare boobs helped calm the seas.  I'll have to remember that every time the surf gets too intense at the beach!
