I don't think 2009 was a great year for music, though perhaps in the fullness of time, I'll come to the realization that it wasn't so bad after all.

These are my two top picks:

Owl City - Fireflies

T.I. feat. Justin Timberlake - Dead And Gone
(Wikipedia says the album was released January 4, 2009)

I'm compiling my best of the decade list. At some point I might post that here. Coldplay will be at the top of that list.

It really doesn't belong in a 2009 list, but the song became a major 2009 hit in the UK:

Piece of trivia: Morrissey and his band posed naked for the inside poster of the 7" single "I'm Throwing My Arms Around Paris" with records over their genitals.  Morrissey was once quoted as saying "I think my genitals were the result of a crude practical joke".

Jared: I was referring to songs that were released and re-released for 2009.

My favorite new music was probably either Night Castle by Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Buffet Hotel by Jimmy Buffett, or Fearless by Taylor Swift (which came out in 2008, but whatever).

Taylor Swift is alright.  I liked 'Love Story', but it didn't really make me want to rush out and buy it on CD.  Though I do felt really bad for her when Kanye West upstaged her at the MTV awards saying that her award should have gone to Beyonce!  What a d.ickhead!

Kasabian's song "Fire" is excellent, I'm surprised I left it out of my list.  :-S

I think my find for the year would be Paramore's album 'Brand New Eyes'. Not sure what song I like best, but I can't believe it is still on repeat on my iPod.

MUSE: Uprising

Two I would definitely include. Also:  KINGS OF LEON: Sex on Fire

Pink - Sober

It was released in November 2008, but is up for a 2010 Grammy January 31st, so I think it qualifies as a 2009 song.

Just one question: why do so many young people see Paramore as such a majorly influential band?  I've heard a couple of their songs, they're alright but hardly innovative, ground breaking or earth-shattering.  To me it's just pleasant moderate FM radio alternative rock with a cute foxy female lead singer.

Is it bad that I immediately went to find the "like" button when I saw this?
