Can Audiobooks be Discussed in this Section?
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:22:24 pm »
Or is it just for books we've read with our eyes rather than heard read through our ears?

Thanks.

I can't speak for the forum, but I consider it reading, as you still imagine everything, and so I'd say you can still discuss it here.

Still a book as far as I’m concerned @Tree

I don’t understand how you can listen to it. I bought one to listen in the car and I can just not focus at all on it

That's probably a good thing, the road is more important ;)

Try it before bed or however else you would usually read, only close your eyes and listen instead. Maybe once you're more used to it, it will be easier at other times

I prefer to read, but I listened to a lot of audio books when I drove a semi. I don't think it gives you a lesser experience, for the most part.

Thanks everyone. Looks like audiobooks are acceptable.

You're supposed to sit and listen to them with full focus, the way you would read. Some are a lot better than others in the way they're read though.

I've been listening to Ender's Game, they have a different narrator depending on the character that the chapter focuses on, it really adds to the immersion.

I think Audable has a full cast version of Ender's Game up on the app now. Iv read it a few times and enjoy it, but I never really got too enthralled in the full series.

@cjpilotboy Stupid questions: Do you prefer an audio book to a physical book? Do you listen when you drive or does that interupt your concentration?

 :like

This

That is why I prefer podcasts over audiobooks. Plus the narrator can really kill a audiobook's strength or story if they are dull readers or just suck.

I really only use audiobooks when I'm reading a classic book (ones from the 17/18th century, usually they are always public domain books) but I have to have the physical (or ebook version) book with me so I can follow along. It makes it way easier to read and follow and understand since those books of that era are quite lengthy, dull at times, and full of fancy words that we no long use. I read The Brothers Karamazov last year like this.

Not a dumb question at all @the_nude_topher
I like audio for a few reasons. 1. Its diverse and adds spoken quality into what you are reading (For Sanderson's audio releases the voice actors are coached on proper pronunciations of names which is a unique benefit). 2. It allows you to do something during the listen.  3. You dont have to have good lighting to read. 4. There are many scenarios where having a full sized book with me just is impractical, but I always have my cell phone.

Im sure I can find more reasons to support the idea if you want to dig into it!
