Good. But, within the same genre, still better is the Japanese "Alice in Borderland".

I was just going to mention how similar Squid Game seems to be to Alice in Borderland. I wonder if Squid Game was influenced by Alice in Borderland

Everyone says that for every show. I never believe them. That instinct is almost always proven right I've learned.

usually its the opposite for me. when I finally watch a show my friends have been telling me to watch, I actually end up enjoying it.

I watched it too, I thought it was pretty good. Very good acting, but it was a bit homophobic at times

How was it homophobic? Where did that even come from

The stuff with the VIPs, how they are almost all coded as gay and depicted as depraved deviants.

Literally one guy was gay and of course they're all snobby assholes. They're millionares/billionares that bet on people winning the games and enjoy watching people die in them.

Characters can be coded as gay without actually explicitly saying they’re gay, and a lot of the VIPs were coded as gay.

The game problem-solving and the mysterious figures in "Alice" are more intriguing.
"Squid Games" attracts more debate because it depicts weaponized child's play and socio-economic controversy.

some stories are death games first and foremost, and the focus is on that aspect and the puzzles etc.

squid game is a story about south korean society's relationship w capitalism and the US and how that affects people first and foremost, using a death game as a vessel, so the emphasis is on making sure the components fit that

also you have to look at the broader context when it comes to how shows end up handling things like gayness. none of the players or guards had any indication that they were into the same gender, and the only one we did get was a decadent, evil rich man. while that does not necessarily stand out as over homophobia, it is at best unfortunate, and when taken in with the broader context of people from centuries ago to today seeing homosexuality and bisexuality as an expression of decadence, it definitely has issues
