Have you ever heard of the island of Koversada?
It is the second largest island of the Vrsar group, with an area of 5.5 ha and a 1 km long coastline.
It is synonymous with naturist tourism in modern Vrsar. The first naturist settlement on the Adriatic was founded in 1961 on the island and the neighboring mainland connected by a bridge at the entrance to the Lim channel (bay).
In 1972, the first naturist society in Croatia was founded there - the Society of Friends of Koversada (later the Society of Naturists of Koversada). The first president of the Society was Regjep Tofani from Ljubljana, and the secretary was Jerko Sladoljev from Poreč. At the beginning of August, the traditional Miss Koversada pageant takes place on the island. Rudolf Halbig, owner of the travel agency Miramare from Munich, contributed significantly to the development of naturism.
Today, the naturist camp covers an area of about 120 ha. In 2003, the beach in Koversada was awarded the Blue Flag for the cleanliness of the sea and care for the environment.
Why am I writing this? Because the company Maistra d.d. which has this islet in the concession along with the Camp of the same name, announced that from next season they are dividing the camp into two parts, of which only one smaller part, which does not include the Koversada islet at all, will remain naturist, and the remaining part of the camp will be converted into a textile camp.
Personally, I have never been to this camp, I had the intention this summer, but unfortunately I didn't make it. The problem is not even in earnings, because Koversada is operating in a large profit, regardless of the fact that the camp is outdated and needs to be completely renovated, including sanitary facilities, activities, restaurants, bars, but apparently Maistra doesn't care about a part of Croatian history that has based its beginnings of tourism, among other things, precisely on naturism. Great Britain has seen a 20 percent increase in naturism compared to the period 30 years ago, but Maistra blames naturists for the apparently insufficient profits, but not on the lack of investment in the historic camp, which is out of date.
Koversada and Valalta are the largest camps of this type in this area, while Koversada is also the oldest naturist camp in the whole of Europe, so it would be nice if it remained that way. :)
