The Oscars were something I would always get excited for. I'm a certified movie buff (pun intended) and I'm always down to see each thing that's been nominated. Though this year feels like that 2024 was not a great year for movies.

Conclave, The Brutalist, The Substance, A Complete Unknown, Wicked and Dune Part 2 were great. Emilia Pérez, The Nickel Boys, and I'm Still Here I honestly haven't seen (It doesn't help that Emilia Pérez is currently the most hated movie that somehow got a ton of nominations). Anora I thought was overrated. It had good acting, but I was bored by that one. I also just didn't find that one that funny.

I'm currently banking on either Conclave or The Brutalist to win best picture, though I think The Substance deserves to win. Demi Moore I've locked in on who I think will win best actress. For best actor, I'm giving Adrien Brody a slight edge over Timothée Chalamet, though that one's a little more unpredictable. Personally, I'd rather have Ralph Finnes win, but I'm not confidant he has enough buzz.

Wild Robot I think is a lock in for best animated feature, though Flow could surprise and take the win (which would be a big win for independent animation).

Do you think it's a good year that I'm just not seeing? What are some of your picks?

I hate it. Russian actors, at least those who haven't condemned the war, should not be nominated. The movie "Anora" should be under sanctions because they worked with pro-putin actors, but here we are glorifying it. This is the first nomination of any russian actor in decades. Fuck that.

I don't usually care about em.  It is interesting to look at past years and see what won vs what else came out that year and how well they hold up.
