where to begin with this?

first: novig is a sports betting app. that they tout "no betting on wars or deaths or politics, just sports" as a selling point is just a depressing sign of the times.

second: women athletes exist, and they deserve the kind of attention that puts them in ads like this. different and better ones, but the point stands. (that novig resorted to this instead just makes them more suspect in my eyes.)

third:
sydney sweeney knows her most reliable audience, and it's men who find her attractive. ...well, not just that, because that's understandable. it's more so a certain subset of men who interpret her as an embodiment of their politics, who flip-flop between being lewd and puritanical about women but tend to treat them as sex objects either way.

and that's what she's playing into here. it's not normalizing or desexualizing nudity at all - not that nudity in a sexual context is bad on its face, but when it's put in service of naked misogyny and lurid advertising, that's one place i draw the line. am i being too uncharitable about this? is there a silver lining here?

If you could have been in the room when I let out a sigh just now you'd have been blown across the floor it was so big. Honestly I agree with everything you say and I'm just as sick of this kind of nonsense. I don't think you're being too uncharitable at all and I can't see any silver lining.

Could not agree more with everything you said.

Novig basically just cashed out on the lustful degens with this ad. The people who are victims of lust are pretty susceptible to losing money gambling too because their minds are just weaker by nature. And it worked. Novig hit over 1B in trading volume (great for their bottom line from all the fees I'd imagine)

And I don't even have to get into how disrespectful this is to women athletes all around who work so hard to compete at the level they do and get the respect they deserve. This ad just takes a fat shit over all of that.
