Communicating naturist issues through little drawings?
« on: July 19, 2010, 09:06:16 pm »
This is a "Naturist Activism" post. It's about communicating what naturism is about to the textile world. If you're in a hurry, you can skip to "Here's my idea" way down below.

There's a guy named Dan Roam who charges a lot of money to big corporations and other organizations to teach their employees how to draw simple back-of-the-napkin drawings (see example below) to communicate complex issues. He's offering his first public seminar in September in New York City. For $1,495, you can attend a two-day seminar to learn how to create effective presentations using cute drawings. (He also has a couple of books which are a lot less expensive.)

Mr. Roam says that if you go to a Kindergarten class and ask the kids how many of them can draw, they'll all put up their hands. Then, if you ask how many of them can read and write, just a few of them will put up their hands. Then, if you went back when they're 16 years-olds in high school and asked how many can read and write, they'd all put up their hands. But if you asked how many can draw, only about two would put up their hands.

We all know a picture is worth a thousand words. So why do we forget how to draw???

In 2009, Mr. Roam (and a friend, C. Anthony Jones, M.D.) created a very popular presentation explaining the U.S. healthcare debate in simple drawings.

You can see Dan Roam's award-winning healthcare PowerPoint presentation at stickyslides.blogspot.com

Sorry for taking so long to get to the point. Here's my idea: Let's create a little slideshow of simple drawings to explain to the non-naturist world what naturism is all about, why they might want to become naturists too, and why we'd like more beaches designated clothing optional.

Childish hand-drawn pictures are best! But if you must use a painter program, try to keep it simple! Artistic talent is not required, and may be a liability. The main thing is to communicate the message simply and effectively.

By the way, what Mr. Roam will teach you in his seminar is to answer the questions Who? What? Where? When? Why? and How? So be sure to answer those!

There's a cartoon in the gallery that Karla's done that might fit in well here.
