Why are nudist magazines sold along side porn mags?
« on: September 11, 2010, 06:53:33 pm »
So the other day I was in a book store and I was looking at the latest gaming magazine, PC Gamer I think it was and I noticed that in the top shelf where the Adults magazines are, were a couple of family orientated nudist/ naturist magazines.  I don’t get why just because magazines feature full frontal nudity of nudists of all ages should be placed next to Hustler, Club and Penthouse mags that show explicit sex of adults.

I think that nudist magazines should be sold with the lifestyle or travel mags.

What store were you in? I've never even heard of naturist magazines being sold in stores, let alone alongside adult magazines. I always thought it was an online business.

He is in Canada, Drew and I am not sure what each areas regulations are there. Perhaps others can enlighten?

I know in Australia, they are sold in News Agents and I think, but am unsure, they are in the lifestyle sections there.  I guess it depends on each states views of it.  Only an Aussie knows for sure.

If they are sold in the mens magazine area, they should not be but perhaps its also what the feeling is of the individual store owner?  I can not speak from knowledge.

In Germany you can see and buy nudism magazines in every newspaper store and even a lot of petrol stations.
They are not in adult sections. Pornographic magazines such as for example The Hustler will be sealed in opaque film.
But Playboy and other equivalent magazines are freely available.

Regulations? There's no regulations about top-shelfs, it's just a business decision.

It is not by area, or provincial jurisdiction, as it is in the U.S.?  Interesting.

It's kind of the same deal as what you have in the US that if the federal government doesn't legislate on something, the provinces can all make up different rules like what we have on the legal drinking age for example (it's either 18 or 19, depending on the province). It's just an area no one legislated on (as far as I know).

In Japan, porn magazines were at a kid's level in train station newsstands. Don't know if they had any naturist magazines.

Display of magazines may be regulated by city bylaws in some Canadian cities. I found this ridiculous incident that happened in West Vancouver, BC, in which a woman had to remove a magazine sticking out of a backpack in a clothing store display to find material she found offensive:

Quote from: CBC News, January 16, 2009
American Apparel store fined for displaying adult magazine

The American Apparel store in West Vancouver's Park Royal Mall has been fined $100 for displaying a sexually explicit magazine, following a CBC interview with an angry mother.

The fine was levied against the outlet of the Los Angeles-based clothing retailer on Wednesday under a city bylaw that requires adult magazines to be displayed under an opaque cover and at least 47 inches above the floor.

The fine followed a complaint by Trina Campbell, a West Vancouverite who found the magazine displayed in a backpack in the store while shopping with her 13-year-old daughter on Tuesday.

When she opened the magazine, entitled BUTT, it flipped open to an explicit double-page photograph of two men engaged in a sex act.

Bylaw officers laid the fine after hearing an interview with Campbell on CBC Radio on Wednesday, Liz Holitzki, the city's manager of bylaws, permits and inspections, told CBC News.

I loved this comment someone posted on the CBC website:

Hence the "as far as I know" because some towns can have crazy regulations (the one I was born in bans porn altogether from any business) but that kind of silliness is rather rare and I've yet to hear about a town that tells you on which shelves you can put stuff.

I can't speak for magazines but I do know that some "naturist video" lines have basically been a cover for showing images of nude teen & pre-teen girls.  Usually it's video from Eastern Europe & mostly just slow motion video of teen girls doing things while soft music plays in the background.

Putting nude teens in art publications is dicey enough, you could end up in court for selling it.  I'd imagine that there is a similar issue with nudist magazines.  Even if they are legit publications, put them on the top shelf with the porn.  It's what an old teacher of mine used to call CYA - Cover Your Assets.  That way you have less worry about ending up in litigation with some mother who's unhappy that her 11 year old boy was flipping through it.

I saw an adult magazine in Quebec about 5 years ago, I think it was called Oui, that had a bizarre combination of hard core sex and family nudists on beaches and camps in Quebec and France.  Obviously I didn't buy it.

But in BC, Alberta, Quebec, New Brunswick and New South Wales Australia I have seen nudist magazines only ever sold next to adult mags.

I can’t say for Germany as I haven’t actively looked for German nudist mags at the news stands.  But when I was there I did see that magazines and newspapers containing nudity are the most common there than any where else I have been.  But one odd thing that I saw is they don’t show female genitalia even in Playboy.  It is always airbrushed out as either a black blur or just erased, making the model look as anatomically correct as a Barbie doll.  Prompting one of my friends to sarcastically suggest that maybe German Women don’t have vaginas.  However every week the German Kids magazine Bravo releases an edition with a nude boy and girl between 16 and 21 years (I think those are the ages) and they are shown as is, no censoring at all.  So it is ok to show full frontal nudity of a 16 year old in Bravo but not a 20 year old in a German Playboy.

Obviously? That sounds weird enough to justify buying one.

If at all. You have t put them there so that you don't offend anyone (money from selling nudist magazines is less than money lost from offended shoppers who'll shop elsewhere) and when people look up there, they aren't looking for nudist stuff. Plus, it's already a niche product to begin with.

Hey Danee,

In most Australian newsagents, the nudist magazines are put in the men's and adult sections - usually filed with the likes of girlie and gay magazines or with tattoo and motobike magazines.  Only a small minority of newsagents put them in the health and lifestyle section.

The newsagent I go to in Northwest Sydney now keeps them with alternative lifestyles, not porn.  They are alongside yoga, natural medicine and the like :)

I wonder if my rant made em change  :345678

Brilliant news.....way to go James!

Back on topic, yeah most places I see them, they are with the porn mags sadly.

There was a SCOTUS decision in the 50's which I can't recall well enough to find on Google, but it resulted in a brief period in the late 50's and early 60's where nudist magazines were declared not-obscene and they flourished (along with nudist themed movies and other media), mostly because it was one of the few legal ways to get pictures of naked people. But they declined quickly as magazines like Playboy and eventually, real porn, became legal and accessible.

The few magazines that are left (N, H&E, one or two others I can't think of of the top of my head) are genuine nudist interest mags, since no one *but* nudists would have any real interest in buying them. People with prurient interests have better outlets now - even people with a nudist fetish have their own pay sites, so there's literally no reason for them to buy magazines.

Though largely because of that, I can't imagine that they'll last much longer given the overall decline of the magazine industry.

The videos today seem to accomplish the same thing as the magazines did in the 60's, but for a much more nefarious purpose in my view. They're the closest thing you can get to legal child porn - and I'm quite certain that if you got your hands on the customer lists for these videos, the vast majority would be pedophiles. If ever the creation and distribution of child porn were legalized (and I certainly would never advocate such thing), you'd see the market for those videos dry up pretty quickly.
