Believe it or not, I don't know how to swim.  :45

(that's awkward, I know!)

Well, well, well, .. you know about global warming. It is highly advisable to become a good swimmer. ;-)
Actually I am not surprised. A friend of my from India didn't know how to swim. I taught her how to swim and two weeks later she swam in the pacific ocean! So I'm sure that if you want to learn how to swim you'll be successfull. Just ask for someone who teaches swimming in a professionell way. That might be less stressfull.

I'm a pretty decent swimmer. I put 50m (164ft) but I honestly don't really know how long that is. I have a hard time with distances... if you told me to walk (or drive) for 100 ft, I would have no idea how far that would be! I would have to ask for a landmark instead.

Either way, I feel like 50m sounds reasonable and like something I could do. I might fall into the "can swim several 50m lengths without stopping" if I can ever figure out how long that actually is.

An Olympic swimming pool is 50m.

i can swim across a small pool no problem, Ive never measured how far I can go without stopping though I guess its not that far. I havent been swimming for a few years now and i really want to go again. I want to try nude swimming though and I dont know of any clubs or swimming centres around here that do that sort of thing.

Or (and not wanting to sound like a wandering forum advert here)... go to Germany!

I'm not a particularly great or keen swimmer - could probably just about avoid drowning if I had to. Gf is a far more confident swimmer so I tend to leave her to do laps at the pool whilst I'm in the sauna, jacuzzi or just lazing about.

When she's doing her laps she actually says she prefers to wear a costume  :4245 keeps everything in it's place

I used to do a bit of fitness swimming back in 2005-06 (did a bit of competitive later on), plus I learned how to swim at a fairly young age. So, I'd say I'm a pretty strong swimmer.

I learned how to swim at a young age and swam on a swim tram until I started high school(2002).

Dont they teach swimming in schools over there?

I dont claim to be a great swimmer but I can manage a few laps. Probably more limited by fitness than swimming ability :D

I can say swimming lessons saved my life though. A mate and I got caught in a huge rip standing chest deep; felt the sand moving and the next time i looked back at the beach it was 500m away :|

mate i've got the answer for you...(if shes a competetive swimmer) - tell her swimming topless in training will increase drag, so when she suits up for competition she will be faster.

If your not a fan of lycra, you can use this on your cyclist buddies also  :909

she used to swim for her school, but is not a competitive swimmer now. We're going down later so I'll suggest that she just takes the bottom half of a costume (she normally swims in a one-piece but does have a bikini)  although the drag will all be up the top so she might as well not wear anything at all - not sure what others in pool will think though....

would the same drag effect apply for guys who trained in the nude...

I'm gonna say English Channel - I'm a pretty damn strong swimmer.

It isn't the distance that is the problem.  If you've never swum in cold open water you're in for a brand new experience.  The waves are exhausting.
Millions of years of evolution have combined to produce me.
I'm rather hoping that I don't bugger it up in one lifetime.
