Und natürlich darf in keinem Kanon von Wert das kleine Drama von Herzschmerz und Liebesnot, auch bekannt als Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers fehlen, welches nach seiner Veröffentlichung so große Resonanz fand, auch in einer nicht unbeträchtlichen Anzahl an Selbstmorden aus Liebeskummer. Wie bei eigentlich jedem Werk (von Rang) stellt sich zunächst die Frage, wie viel Autobiographisches in der fiktiven Geschichte enthalten ist. Und Goethe selbst gab in Dichtung und Wahrheit bereitwillig Auskunft über sein Seelenleben. Demnach entsprang das Standardwerk der Sturm-und-Drang-Epoche dem wahren Leben und ist als Therapie anzusehen für Goethes unerfüllte Liebe zu Lotte aus Wetzlar.

In Rudolph Stölzls Film Goethe! wird nun diese so intensiv erlebte Episode aus Goethes Leben nachgestellt und ins romantische Bild gesetzt. So lernen wir den jungen Goethe (Alexander Fehling) kennen, der noch keinen Erfolg als Dichter und Schriftsteller gefunden hat und seinem bürgerlichen Schicksal als angehender Jurist nur widerwillig nachstrebt. Aus dem Affekt heraus entsendet sein Vater (Henry Hübchen) ihn in die Provinz, wo Goethe sich am Reichskammergericht verdingen soll. Doch das Dorfleben hält eine Attraktion ungeahnter Liebesleiden bereit in Gestalt einer jungen Frau – Lotte (Miriam Stein). Goethes Liebe entflammt für sie, zumal sie ihm Mut macht, der Karriere des Dichters nachzueifern. Was Goethe allerdings nicht weiß: Lotte ist seinem Vorgesetzten Kestner (Moritz Bleibtreu) schon versprochen, und die zarte Liebe von Goethe und Lotte ist unweigerlich zum Scheitern verurteilt.

Die erst kürzlich aus der Taufe gehobene Produktionsfirma deutschfilm GmbH scheint es sich zur Aufgabe machen zu wollen, deutsche Geschichte lebendig werden zu lassen. So wird auch der zweite Film sich einem Kulturgut widmen, das aus Deutschland nicht mehr wegzudenken ist: dem Fußball. In Der ganz große Traum des Konrad Koch darf Daniel Brühl den Fußball als alternatives Mittel zur Erziehung nach Deutschland holen.

I for myselfe think that the subject of Goethe and his love to Lotte is played fantastic.
The actors totally convincing in their roles and there is little to no boredom.
It is a good realization of a great theme and a great historical person.
