I had such great hopes for Pierce Brosnan but after Golden Eye then his films deteriorated quickly. But then we need to make a distinction between the way the character is portrayed by the actor and the films that they are put in to a certain extent, although admittedly each influences the other.
He was too much like Roger Moore for my liking. Too much a suave gentleman, not really convincing as someone who is dangerous.
He wasn't my favourite at first but I've since grown to appreciate Timothy Dalton. The actor has actually grown to be far sexier as he's matured, but as Bond he played the character close to how Ian Flemming wrote it in the book. I like him because he plays Bond as a dangerous cold killer. It's also why I like Daniel Craig. I especially appreciate Daniel Craig's physical thuggery as it brings home quite what would be going on if it were real. But I know that people will be voting for Daniel Craig, and because Timothy Dalton has some rather fine acting skills I've given Timmy my vote.
I was never really that bothered about Sean Connery's Bond to be honest. I don't know why. He does nothing for me.
I vote the opposite. Each to their own.
In my opinion Sean Connery is the gold standard against which other Bond actors are judged. The original James Bond of the books was a charming thug so the way I look at it is this: if I was ever in a bad corner and had agents of international evil pursuing me, which Bond would I believe could pull off the rescue. This is a not a difficult decision for me. That is why Connery's Bond seems best; he is credible. That is why Daniel Craig places a close second and Pierce Brosnan comes third. Part of Brosnan's placement comes from the slippage of the Bond franchise ethos during the period he was playing the role. That slippage was greatest when Roger Moore was in the role and seemed to be just playing it for laughs. Moore was never credible as Bond; he always looked far too fragile. George Lazenby was a disaster in the role and Timothy Dalton was worse. He always impressed me as the sort you might find peeking in your windows after dark rather than rescuing you from danger.
Now, to re-cast the question from another angle let's consider sex appeal. The central pillar of the whole Bond franchise is sex appeal. So, girls only please, which Bond would you prefer to have trying to seduce you?
For me, Sean Connery wins in this category too, followed by Brosnan, then Craig. Moore and Lazenby would get laughed at and told to shove off. If Dalton gave it a try I'd call hotel security because he has a definite Ick! factor about him, like the smell of bad fish.
But each to their own. That is the way it is with personal opinions, they are personal. In the case of actors' portrayals of on-screen characters who knows what minor visual cue will cause you to vote yea or nay.
