Favorite Beatles songs
« on: November 25, 2010, 05:52:30 pm »
I would have predicted that A Day In The Life or Come Together or Hey Jude would have been the most popular Beatles tracks on iTunes downloads.

It seems the quieter songs did well, and George Harrison tunes did well.

What are your favorite Beatles songs?

Not surprised at all with this list, but my personal favorite will always be A Day in the Life.

A little bit of Texas trivia: On August 10, 1996, KTCY-FM began its broadcasting activities under the name "Fab 105", broadcasting all-Beatles music. I recall that it was commercial free, but I could be mistaken on that. Sadly, it is long gone. (It is now a religious station.)

It was the first [Dallas - Fort Worth] Metroplex station to be fully programmed from computer hard drives ... the station ran jockless through 1997. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KZMP-FM#History

Here's my personal list. They are loosely ranked, but it's really hard to definitely say that I like one more than another of these. I also like a lot of the early Rock and Roll music the Beatles covered.

Penny Lane - Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
Yesterday - Help! (1965)
Michelle - Rubber Soul (1965)
Hey Jude - Hey Jude (1968/1970)
Let It Be - Let It Be (1970)
While My Guitar Gently Weeps - The White Album (1968)
Blackbird - The White Album (1968)
She's Leaving Home - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
Eleanor Rigby - Revolver (1966)
Lady Madonna - Hey Jude (1968/1970)
Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
Strawberry Fields Forever - Magical Mystery Tour (1967)
A Day in the Life - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (1967)
Come Together - Abbey Road (1969)
Here Comes the Sun - Abbey Road (1969)
Can't Buy Me Love - A Hard Day's Night (1964)
All You Need is Love - Magical Mystery Tour (1967)/Yellow Submarine (1969)
Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown) - Rubber Soul (1965)

This is not my list, just a Listmania list I found. It includes some post-Beatles tracks by Beatles members as well.

     2.  Imagine - Imagine by John Lennon (1971)

I dug up a rather interesting list. This list was compiled from a survey of approximately 100 musicians, producers and others associated with the music industry. Each participant had 10 votes.

From UNCUT magazine, July 2001 (The magazine included a CD with covers of many Beatles songs by various artists. BTW, the magazine was printed with four different covers that month -- one for each of the Beatles.)

A Day In The Life
Strawberry Fields Forever
I Am The Walrus
Tomorrow Never Knows
In My Life
Across The Universe
Something
Rain
Helter Skelter
Happiness Is A Warm Gun
Paperback Writer
Ticket To Ride
Hey Jude
Revolution
Penny Lane
Norwegian Wood
I Want To Hold Your Hand
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Love Me Do
Help
Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight
I'm So Tired
Come Together
Nowhere Man
Julia
The Long And Winding Road
And I Love Her
Eight Days A Week
Don't Let Me Down
She Said She Said
You've Got To Hide Your Love Away
I'm Only Sleeping
We Can Work It Out
Eleanor Rigby
All You Need Is Love
Yesterday
Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds
Let It Be
Blue Jay Way
And Your Bird Can Sing
Back In The USSR
Sexy Sadie
It's All Too Much
She Loves You
Baby You're A Rich Man
Flying
Get Back
Please Please Me
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey
This Boy
Here Comes The Sun
Hard Day's Night

It's funny that Here Comes The Sun is at the bottom of this list.

They had so many great songs what's not to like?  Where does one begin?  There's no point in telling you to try to see it my way and hoping that We Can Work It Out.  Really, I'm So Tired trying to get someone to Please Please Me that I could easily spend more than A Day In The Life trying to get an agreement and Tomorrow Never Knows if we'll agree then what we had agreed Yesterday.  The discussion goes Nowhere Man because everyone has Something that they like that is different and The Long And Winding Road between opinions is so great a distance that It's All Too Much for me.  The notion that we might Come Together is too fantastic so we should just Let It Be.

Okay, I'll stop now  :45

In no particular order except for the first one, here are some of my favourite Beatles' songs . . . or so I think today.  Maybe if my mood was different I might choose differently.

#1 - And I Love Her
We Can Work It Out
Yesterday
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Norwegian Wood
The Long And Winding Road
Don't Let Me Down
Hey Jude
Back In The USSR
Here Comes The Sun
In My Life
Something
Millions of years of evolution have combined to produce me.
I'm rather hoping that I don't bugger it up in one lifetime.

I am surprized no one has mentioned "Yellow Submarine".  I admit its one of my favorite songs by them.  Sometimes I be listening to it when cleaning around reactor area, under the shaft(yes its fun to have long shaft spinning, touching my back).

I heard "Jealous Guy" on the radio a couple of days ago, and I nearly felt like crying.  It's one of John's best ever solo songs.

I think many people will disagree with me on this, but I think that Mark Chapman ought to be released from prison and allowed back into the community.  He's done more time than a terrorist, traitor or a serial killer.  It's not like John Lennon was the American President or God (contrary to what many misguided hippies otherwise believe).  He was a very flawed, disturbed, self-abusing human being who had the knack of writing profound songs for his time.

He receives hundreds(?) of death threats each day from people all over the world. I think there are people crazier than him, but i dont know if someone would actually kill him. I have no sympathy for murderers, though.
