Following previous research that revealed 27% of female cruisers sunbathe topless, a further study conducted by an independent cruise comparison website has revealed 9% of holidaymakers have sunbathed nude. The majority of those who admitting to doing so, said they did so on a cruising holiday.

After previous research revealed that more than a quarter of female cruisers sunbathe topless, an independent cruise comparison website conducted a study to further investigate the sunbathing habits of British holidaymakers. 1,271 Britons were subsequently polled, each of whom had been on holiday in the past 5 years.

In light of a previous study, conducted by CruiseCompare.co.uk, that revealed women are more comfortable sunbathing topless on a cruise liner than on a dry land holidays, the independent cruise comparison site asked British holiday makers their attitudes on nudist beaches and sunbathing nude.

Initially, the respondents were asked ‘Have you ever sunbathed nude whilst on holiday?’ to which 9% of total respondents answered ‘yes.’ Of the respondents who admitted to sunbathing nude on holiday over half, 52%, said they did so when on a cruising holiday.

The respondents who admitted to sunbathing nude were subsequently asked why this was the case. A fifth, 21%, said that they visited ‘secure, isolated beaches’ at some point on their cruise holiday which led them to sunbathing with no clothes on.

A further 6% of the respondents who admitted to sunbathing nude when on a cruising holiday stated that they do so because the cruise liner on which they were travelling had a ‘designated area’ that allowed for nude sunbathing.

The respondents were then asked the multiple-choice question ‘Would you feel more comfortable sunbathing nude on a cruise or on a dry land holiday? to which the majority, 59%, answered a ‘cruising holiday.’

Although 9% of the respondents admitted to sunbathing nude when on holiday, a further 17% said they had ‘visited a nudist beach’ and a further tenth, 11%, stated that they ‘would like to visit a nudist beach’; a third of which, 32%, said that they would like to visit a nudist beach out of ‘curiosity.’

Danielle Fear, Managing Director of CruiseCompare.co.uk, commented on the findings: “As I said after our previous research that revealed women feel more comfortable sunbathing topless on a cruise holiday, how a person sunbathes is entirely a personal decision, as long as the beach, hotel or cruise liner doesn’t have any regulations against it. Although it would be lovely to have no tan lines, it does take an incredible amount of confidence to sunbathe completely nude!”

She continued: “Many cruise liners have designated areas onboard that are only for topless or nude sunbathing, so it wasn’t overly surprising to see that many of the respondents felt more comfortable to sunbathe nude on a cruise liner. The one piece of advice I would give to those nude sunbathers is to slap on the suntan lotion, as you don’t want to be getting delicate skin sunburnt!”
