CNN: 10 islands for every type of traveler
« on: May 02, 2011, 06:51:18 am »
CNN-Article

So what does CNN says about Rab, that is on the second place of the list as the birthplace of modern skinny dipping:

"2. Nudist: Rab, Croatia
The Croatian island of Rab claims to be the birthplace of modern skinny dipping. In 1936, King Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson obtained permission from city authorities to bathe naked in the inlet of Kandalora, and people have been doing the same on the island’s beaches ever since.
The Lopar peninsula alone has three beaches that are clothing-optional. Sahara beach, a sandy shore fringed by shrubs, is perhaps the most famous. The other two nudist beaches are Stolac and Ciganka.

Tourists who are done with exposing themselves for the day love to stroll around in the medieval old town, where four ancient bell towers and a cluster of monasteries and churches beckon.

For more, check out Rab's official tourism website."

It is just funny to see the names of the beaches still in Croatian, while they could easily translate them :)
And they don't say much about it..

I will show you madness.. and bunnies.. it is the same thing..

It's nice to see that at least foreigners appreciate what we have.

beaches are Stolac and Ciganka.

Hmm... Don't think that Chair and Gipsy Lady are too inviting names for beaches, and in croatian they sound more exotic to the visitors.
BTW, imagine a tourist asking a local for directions using beach names in english.  :909 :909 (Note: majority of the islands population are older folks)

I think for the most part, the English speaking press does not translate the names of proper nouns.  I mean calling al Jazeera "the island" or Los Angeles, CA "The Angels" loses some of its punch when translated.
