I can't believe no-one has mentioned B.B. King on here. He is unquestionably the greatest currently living guitar player, and an absolute genius. I saw him play last week, it was a total honour.

I'm also really suprised no-one has mentioned Jeff Beck, Buddy Guy, Brian May, Les Paul, Lou Reed, Joe Perry, Eddie Van Halen, Derek Trucks and Rhandy Rhoads. So many of the greats in there.

Plus if anyone mentions SRV or Hendrix again and claims they haven't been mentioned yet, I'm gonna give em a slap ^^
On an extended IYNO break... for now.

I can't believe I didn't mention him either, considering he's the only one of all these I've actually heard live! As you say, he is an absolute genius.

Another great I forgot: Django Reinhardt

Has Peter Frampton been mentioned?

I have to admit to really liking Joe Satriani. The technical brilliance is obvious, but he can also have a lot of feeling with his technique but I can understand how that can get drowned out. On the other hand, Steve Vai just left me utterly cold.

I like Jeff Beck as well, not so keen on Eric Clapton. Not sure what fuss is about with him.

No one's mentioned Martin Taylor yet. Jazz guitar I know but very melodic.

I have to say, looking at the very latest generation of guitar players, there's not really much that a new guitarist can do to establish themselves as being different or better.

One thing that I particularly like to hear but don't often manage to find though, is one guitarist really giving the impression of being two guitarists, and not just plonking away with a beat on the bottom E string either but two interacting melodies or a melody over a rhythm.

Very good list so far, and I agree on much of it! I'm going throw in one of my fav guitar players, although he is just as much known for his vocals.

Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

Oh, and how can I forget one of the best in metal who was tragically murdered in 2004. "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott
(formerly from Pantara and Damageplan)

Zakk Wylde (Black Label Society)

I was thinking of Zakk Wylde earlier. I'm only familiar with his Ozzy Osbourne days though. I was shocked to see him on TV a few years back looking like some huge biker dude! He was a young skinny man just out of his teens when I saw pictures of him last!

I particularly like how he makes his guitar squeal, it's very distinctive. I think he really quick bends two strings together somehow.
