and the warcraft series was all strategy games until world of warcraft came out. sometimes longtime series try new genres, which necessitates taking on the requirements of these genres? big mmos (ff14 is one of the biggest and has been for years) need constant server and moderation costs paid for somehow. also, ff14 famously allows you to play a huge chunk of the game (dozens and dozens of hours worth) for free without any purchase or subscription anyway
