Censorship in brazilian soap opera opening
« on: August 30, 2011, 07:54:42 pm »
Back in 1993 (almost 20 years ago), there was a soap opera called 'Mulheres de Areia' (literal translation: Women of Sand), that was probably the biggest audience in brazilian television at that time. It is still remembered today for many different reasons. One of them was its opening, which featured a nude model:

Now, in 2011, 'Mulheres de Areia' will be reprised for the second time. But now, it will be a little bit different: all nudity from its opening will be blurred. Back in 1993, there was no Parental Guidelines, but now our television has a lot of rules and classification. So, no nudity allowed.

The thing is: nobody complained about nudity when it was aired in 1993, nor during its first rerun. And after all, the nudity is so small, so quick, without any sexual conotation.

We are really living a time of Political correctness.

The opinion from a journalist in one of our biggest newspaper about the case. Sorry about any translation mistakes:

Quote
TV Globo will reprise in 12 days the soap opera Mulheres de Areia, 1993 version, in 'Vale a Pena Ver de Novo'. But image enhancements will do the job of blurring/disguising (or the verb to prefer) Monica Carvalho's nudity in the opening of the soap opera by Ivani Ribeiro.

Here is the argument pressed by the issuer in the press release distributed:
"Based on its principles and values, Globo decided to adapt the opening to the 'Vale a Pena Ver de Novo', making it less explicit nudity. Although this opening has aired with the novel in 1993, the station evaluated that it was not compatible with the country's current moral standards. "

Is not this fun? It means that we are more moralist now than yesterday? More moralistic than we were nearly 20 years ago? There is, of course, the objective issue of parental rating - in terms of what it is today, with content suitable for time and rating - didn't exist in 93.

We would be very close to the thinking of the Americans, whose films allow real massacres, blood everywhere, but nudity, oh, show someone how it came to the world, in public, no way.

The opening will not be reduced, the song is the same, by Pepeu Gomes, but dither and graphics will try to hide the perfection of Monica Carvaho from those days.
