Geocaching

Cabding got me started... getting ready to go hunting for a couple today that are within a mile of my house!   This is simple fun that doesn't cost a lot.

I have been wanting to get into it for a while, but dont have a gps unit or smartphone. How much do they cost?

I do geocaching for 2 years now. It's quit fun and most caches in nature bring you to very nice places so it's great for people who love sightseeing and are into nature.

A simple GPS what can guide you to the caches and help you find your way back home or guide you on a pre installed track starts at 70€ if you need a color screen pre installed maps, road navigation... the price climbs over 300.

I just happen to already have the phone so it didn't cost me anything extra. There are TONS of microcaches around town but the really good ones that I like best are out in the middle of nowhere and Ammo Cans with pretty awesome stuff in there for trade. I bought some travel bugs to join in on the game a little bit more. I hope my stuff doesn't get lots like what seems to happen to most of them though.

Yeah just listened that episode. It's getting me interested in trying this out in my local area.

I'd just like to say that my partner and I have been keen geocachers for a few years and it's always a great thrill to find one of these hidden treasures. We love to follow a themed hunt, where there are a series of micro-caches laid by one person in a local area that sometimes have a little story linking them together.

We have a bumbag containing a geocaching kit, which includes a compass, a notepad, some tweezers, wet-wipes, a pencil and a small token to leave in the cache to say we have found it. We never swap or take anything. And we always log our find on the geocachers website and thank the person who planted the cache.

Not even attempted to do any geocaching in the buff as the rules state that a cache must always be left in a publicly accessible location - and we don't want to give anyone a heart attack!

I remember I used to do this a lot. For whatever reason, it got really popular around my neighborhood a few years ago. It was fun, but nowadays nobody does it. Coincidentally I stopped by a spot where a cache used to be, and it was completely empty.

Here's in England, it's still very much alive. It started quite some time ago in America but in those days they only used a map and a compass. These days it's so much easier, your smartphone pretty much directs you right to the spot. But you still have to find the cache once you arrive.

I haven't done this in years. I'm glad to see it's still prevalent. I hope this hobby can get people to explore their world. It really helps you appreciate the area to dive right into it.

i geocached with my family once or twice a few years ago, but my memory of it is limited to blindfolding yourself in the middle of the woods with a geiger counter, looking for a mapped bag of random junk

I started Geocaching three times, but every time I have the idea to start geocaching its winter and very cold.....

I just found out about this last year and thought it was really cool so I made an account. I found one really close by so I stopped by to find it while we were out for a family walk. I couldn't find anything so that was upsetting and then I forgot all about it. I should try it again and see if we can find something this time.

Okay, so recently I discovered something called geocaching. It is essentially GPS guided treasure hunting. You go to www.geocaching.com, make an account (either free or premium) and you can search their whole database for all of the geocaches near you. Now a geocache can come in many forms. A little tiny bison tube with a paper to sign, or a giant container with an item and log book. You can trade for the item with something of equal or better value, and you can sign the log book proving you where there. They are always hidden and they can be anywhere in the world! It is a ton of fun for all ages, and anybody can take part. So, I was wondering, are there any geocachers on the forum? Or if not, do you ever plan on trying it out?

I looked into it but I am disappointed by underwater caches being nearly non-existent in my area :(

most can be reached with just a walk under a mile from some ware you can drive the far out ones are rare

I used to d it a bit a few years ago, gonna get back into it again. both me and the gf have been interested. such a good way to get outside
