For many decades, we've loved camping in Oregon. This is one of the
few states, where skinny-dipping is legal. It was only a matter of
time before the two crossed paths.
We once went camping at a spectacular lake, in the heat of the summer.
It was the middle of the week, so there were no other people there
when we arrived and set up camp.
It was a primitive site, so a fire pit needed to be dug, wood needed
to be hauled in, and the many other things normal to this kind of camp
had to be done. That was no problem, since we had the place all to
ourselves, and would have done it all anyway, even if it was crowded.
We also had a lake for fishing and later, for swimming. It was an
ideal location for our two small children and us.
However, it became depressing when a big pickup pulled in to a site
just a little ways down from us, with so many other sites available.
Still, mom, dad, and their 14-year-old daughter didn't make a great
deal of noise, so we didn't care much.
There were other sites available, further away, yes, but as long as
they didn't bother us, it made little difference, and they were
quieter than most camping neighbors we'd had.
They also went through the same bit of setting up camp, digging a fire
pit, and dragging in wood we’d gone through.
We first realized that there was something different when after their
camp was set up, the woman, followed by the man, then the daughter
stripped off all their clothes and went for a swim. We aren't prudes,
and it was merely surprising. Even at a young age, our children knew
the difference between boys and girls, the birds and the bees if you
will.
They were actually less surprised than we were.
Afterward, though, was the most remarkable part. When they got out of the water, they came over to meet their neighbor’s -us. None of them had anything on, yet they were very personable and did and said nothing that was bad. In fact, we've rarely met a family who was more respectful.
From that time, and for a long three-day weekend, they visited us many
times, even eating with us at one point, all while naked. They
accepted us for who we are, and we accepted them for who they were.
At the end of the long weekend, not one of us was the slightest bit
shocked if any of them came over, nude. They were comfortable about
it, why couldn't we be? We even went skinny dipping with them, the
night before we left, at the end of an especially hot day.
To qualify this all, I'm a reverend. However, the human body isn't something to be ashamed of. These people definitely weren't ashamed. It is too bad that so many people are ashamed of so many things, isn't it.
