Title: Swimming ability

I was going to include water skiing for Texans, but I take offense to the noise and waves that go with that. (Yes, I have tried it.)

Hope that will change in the near future (http://im-smiley.com/imgs/smiling/smiling005.gif) (http://im-smiley.com)

I can swim, but I have terrible form since I don't do it much. I put I can swim across a small pool because I only ever swim in backyard pools.

I'm a decent swimmer, and I put competitive even though I'm not anymore (I can still swim 2 miles or so in an endurance swim, and can do 50m in 35s.  Not the fastest, but still at least a little competitive.)

I’m not too bad at swimming short distances but I have always had trouble treading water for some reason.

I grew up living on a lake, and would spend summers in the water the whole time.  I've never competed, but I've been a lifeguard and taught swimming at a summer camp.

Though I'm a scuba diver (Divemaster) I'm hopeless without my mask and fins. I did put that I can swim 25m, but that would be my own creative style combining doggy style, back stroke and breast stroke. Oh it would also take me 5 minutes

When I was younger I swam competitively. I used to train twice a day swimming an average of around 10-14kilometers per day. My goal was to make the Olympics, but unfortunately I didn’t quite make it. I gave swimming up for work commitments.

I still swim occasionally to keep fit, but can’t swim the distance or speed I used to!

I'm a water polo player. Swimming several 50m was the closest I guess really. Probably could make the channel, it would just take a looooooong time ^^

i'm not a great swimmer but it's hard to know my exact distance.  i don't enjoy swimming unless i am nude, so i only really swim at nude venues, where the pools are not really competetive size.

Usually I swim 6 km / week and it feels good.  :543 I don't want to miss it.

Well, well, well, .. you know about global warming. It is highly advisable to become a good swimmer. ;-)
Actually I am not surprised. A friend of my from India didn't know how to swim. I taught her how to swim and two weeks later she swam in the pacific ocean! So I'm sure that if you want to learn how to swim you'll be successfull. Just ask for someone who teaches swimming in a professionell way. That might be less stressfull.

I'm a pretty decent swimmer. I put 50m (164ft) but I honestly don't really know how long that is. I have a hard time with distances... if you told me to walk (or drive) for 100 ft, I would have no idea how far that would be! I would have to ask for a landmark instead.

Either way, I feel like 50m sounds reasonable and like something I could do. I might fall into the "can swim several 50m lengths without stopping" if I can ever figure out how long that actually is.

i can swim across a small pool no problem, Ive never measured how far I can go without stopping though I guess its not that far. I havent been swimming for a few years now and i really want to go again. I want to try nude swimming though and I dont know of any clubs or swimming centres around here that do that sort of thing.

I'm not a particularly great or keen swimmer - could probably just about avoid drowning if I had to. Gf is a far more confident swimmer so I tend to leave her to do laps at the pool whilst I'm in the sauna, jacuzzi or just lazing about.

When she's doing her laps she actually says she prefers to wear a costume  :4245 keeps everything in it's place

I used to do a bit of fitness swimming back in 2005-06 (did a bit of competitive later on), plus I learned how to swim at a fairly young age. So, I'd say I'm a pretty strong swimmer.

I learned how to swim at a young age and swam on a swim tram until I started high school(2002).

Dont they teach swimming in schools over there?

I dont claim to be a great swimmer but I can manage a few laps. Probably more limited by fitness than swimming ability :D

I can say swimming lessons saved my life though. A mate and I got caught in a huge rip standing chest deep; felt the sand moving and the next time i looked back at the beach it was 500m away :|

mate i've got the answer for you...(if shes a competetive swimmer) - tell her swimming topless in training will increase drag, so when she suits up for competition she will be faster.

If your not a fan of lycra, you can use this on your cyclist buddies also  :909

she used to swim for her school, but is not a competitive swimmer now. We're going down later so I'll suggest that she just takes the bottom half of a costume (she normally swims in a one-piece but does have a bikini)  although the drag will all be up the top so she might as well not wear anything at all - not sure what others in pool will think though....

would the same drag effect apply for guys who trained in the nude...

I'm gonna say English Channel - I'm a pretty damn strong swimmer.

It isn't the distance that is the problem.  If you've never swum in cold open water you're in for a brand new experience.  The waves are exhausting.

I'd say I can swim quite a few lengths of a largish pool - 50 m sounds reasonable. I used to do some competitions but it's a long time ago. The only thing that eventually stops me doing lengths is I end up being quite bored.

although would have less effect when doing the back stroke though.... likewise for ladies doing the backstroke...

Swim around 3km three times a week plus my water polo training and competition when I can fit it in.  Fortunately we have a group of about 25 girls who want to play, but for various reasons can't get there each week.  So we slip in when we can.

I'm not sure crossing the English Channel has much to do with technique over stamina and determination.  Much of the little I've seen of the long distance swimmers shows them wallowing on and on and on.

Just a little note - the girls often cross the Channel nude or at least topless because the shoulder straps rub too much over that distance and time in the water.

I go for swimming to a public 25m pool and I normally lap-swim for 10 lenghts... so 250m, and then stop for a while... then again and stop, then again... .

Hmm... here in the Netherlands most kids learn to swim at an early age. So did I. Yet somehow, I don't remember much of my training... I mean I can still sort of swim and float and stuff, but I cannot do anything but a simple breast stroke. Acutally I've been wanting to take some swimming lessons again, but I'm a bit embarrassed that I cannot really swim anymore. And I don't want to end up in a class with 4-year olds LOL

I see that there are a few scuba divers here (I'm also one), have any of you guys scuba dived naked?

I agree, I could make it that distance but it wouldnt be pretty. The poll didnt say it needed to be in proper form. I took swimming lessons as a kid. Once about 6 I was swimming in the hotel pool on vacation, doing the doggy paddle and my grandma insisted I was drowning. Even though my mom didnt think so she jumped in with her dress on to "save me".

I had a little laugh when I went to reply to this thread and got the pop-up warning:

Well, duh!  Not so many people in the northern hemisphere are all that keen on swimming during the winter so I guess it is no surprise the traffic on this thread has stalled.  But summer has come around again, or will soon enough, and now it is time to swim again.  Real swimming, outdoors in open water with no clothes on.

I'm a qualified lifeguard and quite a strong swimmer.  I like natural water, whether fresh or salt, and would like to take a scuba course sometime.  I enjoy both rafting and kayaking and as a result have made a few brutal swims through some seriously scary water but such swims are always over with quite quickly and the shore is always close at hand.  The real test is swimming in the open sea.

I agree actually. With this board in particularly. It just struck me as funny because my husband would sit there and bitch about that. Though, his board was also a very different community. There was a lot of drama so I think it was mainly a pet peeve because some of the threads that would be brought back, he didn't really want to see brought back.

This place is cool though. I don't think there are any threads here that have that kind of problem.

My father gave me big feet and powerful leggs. Im a very fast swimmer. As for the channel id pace myself but not lolly gag. Swimming under water is my favorite, if the waves were harsh id be under them. Worried id be run over by a syray boat. After that id be fully exausted. I like to see how many laps i can go in one breath. Definitly want to try natural diving and surf.

I like to swim, but just for fun.  Swimming in fresh water is best, followed by the ocean, then pools because I don't like the chlorine effect on my hair, it makes it go horrible.  When I practice, I get better, though if I'm out of practice, even doing two lengths is very tiring for me!

I finished 1st in Canada in the 100 back. 2nd in the 50 back and 3rd in the 200 back. 5th in 100 back at the championships in 100 back. I'm sitting at the airport right now. It's a great feeling

Yeah I love swimming too - my favourite sport - swim 3 times a week and I agree you've got to go with speedos when you can't swim nude!

I love swimming completely underwater. Would do free diving, but can't handle the pressure. Scuba diving is amazing. Would love to make friends with other scuba enthusiasts here. Maybe we could all meet up and scuba naked in some beautiful warm waters.

I can swim well enough, just not particularly fast, nor for very long. I get tired out too quickly. Last time, I put it down to a combination of being out of practice, too unfit, and my shorts weighing me down.
