Any railfans here? I have been interested in railways for years probably because our next door neighbour was a train driver.

I am thinking about trying to get back into model railroading after a 10 year hiatus (long story) I want to do HO Scale, I have a bunch of HO scale stuff already
I don't have much of a long or short term plan, my long term plan is of course everyone elses, build something huge
just thought i'd share with everyone

We get a lot of huuuge trains here so I try to snap pictures whenever I can. It's also possible to walk right up to the engines when they're idling on sidings in smaller towns - I haven't actually talked to any engineers yet but I'd love to get a look inside one.

I really like trains. Unfortunately we do not get enough of them around here . . . there is no passenger service here except for summer excursion trains. Mostly I see unit trains of crude oil going to the refinery or LPG leaving the regasification port. There is some variety, though nothing like you would see in the US Mid-West or out in Alberta.
Confession time . . . a friend and I bagged a freight last summer. :879 We got all dressed up in camo then hopped a wood chip train and rode it for 270 km on top of one of the loads . . . out of sight of anyone not in an aircraft we didn't get caught. We had a little picnic enroute and we even did a little naked sunbathing just for bragging rights. It was a lot of fun and it was really exciting, but it was an incredibly stupid thing to do. BIG lecture from my lawyer uncle afterward.
Cross that one off the ol' bucket list.

That place is genuinely brilliant. Hamburg is a great city, I visit friends there every couple of years, St Pauli and the Reeperbahn are good night time fun

Favourite form of transportation, to say the least about it.
Have you guys ever played the Ticket To Ride app? Check it out, when ya get a chance, it is about using startegy to connect rails against opponents, doesn't sound heaps of fun, but it gets addictive.

Mainly it's my room mate that is into Steam Locomotive Trains but his interest is starting to rub off on me since I've been with him to several Heritage Railroads that operate Steam Locomotives.

there aren't that many trains that go through my area however I'm trying to get back into Model Railroading.
I had an ex GF who had an Amtrak/Union Pacific line that ran literally right through her backyard

Yeh I love model railways. My Dad had one as a kid, and now I have one. Had kids trains (Tomy) as a kid. Now I have Hornby HO scale trains. Though they're not set up permanently as I don't have enough room here. But I bring them out at Christmas around the Christmas tree :-)

It's great you can take the train. Here in New Zealand we don't have trains for passenger travel. We have goods trains and trains for tourists expeditions (the Transalpine and TransCoastal) but we don't have passenger trains. We have a few in the North Island but our rail networks are nothing like those in Europe. It's so sad...

That's an understatement but at least the first electric trains are coming into service on the Onehunga line in a few months woohoo

There's been ongoing debates about bullet trains in Canada - a Montreal-Toronto route and a Calgary-Edmonton route and neither has gained traction but there's an upcoming plebiscite in Alberta so we'll see what happens.

I am a huge railfan. I live near CSX's S-Line in north Florida. Drives my wife crazy if I see a green or yellow signal, or hear a train horn.

Love trains! Town I grew up in had two passenger lines going through it, one to NYC and two to Philadelphia, and then all of the abandoned lines, freight lines, and haunted tunnels within driving distance. Love it!

I used to know the author of the last post before he became the transport planner for the council and had to give up Transport blog he's doing great work at council but I miss his musings and the last time I saw him was last year walking down Queen St didn't talk to him. Miss you so much Jarbs :cry:

Ive been into trains for as long as I can remember. I'm especially interested in rare and vintage equipment. I'm considering becoming a Train Operator as well.

I would recommend you go and get a 4 year degree anyway before you go looking for work as an operator. Having a degree will look better on your resume than just having general work experience. Also, direct trainee hire is quite competitive, so pretraining is through interning at Modoc Railroad is a wise investment. However, they dont take anyone under 21, and require either work experience or college education to qualify for internship.

@NudieDaniel I couldn't agree with you more. I think alot of young people, myself included are lost on their career path. I am 25, and I am facing the obligation to work hitting me like a brick wall.

An old topic I know but as Im a train driver I thought Id contribute. Ive been involved/employed on the railways for about 11 years now, first in preservation/heritage and then with a freight operator. Ive always had an interest and being involved with them but the job isnt for everyone. Shiftwork, nightwork and a lot of away from home travel can be tough on family and social life. You might get home from a shift early morning and the spend 90% of the day resting for the next night.
That said, its an extremely well paid job and the 'weekends' can be up to 5 days long.
Im also still involved on the heritage side as a steam locomotive fireman- this is the hobby side.

Oh lovely I always dreaded derailments when I was at a rail museum. We had no equipment to lift things back in the track so everything was manual with ramps, jacks and wooden blocks.

A4 Pacific Sir Nigel Gresley (named after the designer) taken some years ago at North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Engine is currently undergoing its 10 year overhaul at National Railway Museum York.

Yup, a couple of 0-4-0 Barclay steamers 0-4-0 Planet and Hensley diesel, there were also a couple of 0-6-0 diesels but never out of the shed in my time there as they were too big and heavy for the weak bendy track. We had enough trouble red railing things without them dropping off the line too.

Please don't. For every 'cool' video on YouTube, there's a case where it's gone badly wrong. It's incredibly traumatic for the trains crew to make a discovery of a mangled body.
