Title: Star Trek: Picard
Post by: Surin Blastanos on April 27, 2020, 07:00:43 pm
Has anyone watched through the first season of Picard? If so, what are your thoughts?

I want to, but haven't gotten the chance to yet. Sadness. Best Star Trek Captain ever though.

Thought it was very well done.  Always felt like something new but respectfully done.  My only tiny gripe was with the copy and paste cgi fleet at the end- this wouldve been much better :-)

SLIGHT SPOILER: I did love that the romulans have at least 5 planetary sterilisation patterns, which seems like overkill.

I thought it was good! Some pacing issues, and I have my fair share of gripes (especially regarding the handling of returning characters that weren't part of a main cast, but I won't get into that), but it's still a good show with heart and I think it's worth checking out.

That's fair, there were definite problems with pacing, especially early on. I enjoyed the Deep Space Nine-esqe theme of the Federation not always being the good guys, but it didn't really go anywhere later on. I do think the ending sets up some good morality questions for the next season.

My wife and I loved it.  It was great how the music picked up where Nemesis left off, and the first scene picked up where the final scene of TNG left off.  Also, the fact that Picard had a flute theme was really appropriate per TNG.  I'm also super nerdy about the Star Trek uniforms, and these were pretty good.
I kinda wonder where they go next season.  They have that big empty ship and a full crew, and they're not part of the federation.  It seems like it could wind up being a Firefly-type scenario.

Yeah, I can't wait to see what they do next season. LeVar Burton hinted that he might be in the next season, so fingers crossed.

The federation starting to realise that they need to change some of their attitudes. Picard possibly becoming a federation ambassador to the androids.

Don’t worry Matt it’ll see us through at least one lockdown of 2022, possibly from the omega variant by then. Send to starfleet HQ Admiral Janeways office, implement the omega directive immediately, signed captain F Chips, USS Dumfuckery

Yeah I used to love them but they’ve gotten to the stage where time travel is used to rewrite canon or introduce new timelines so they can create more stories in established trek time periods and recast old favourite characters in the hope old fans won’t mind as it’s an alternate reality. This one looks like another Q thing which are never known to cause permanent changes but instead create interesting and infuriating challenges for Picard to get pissed off over.

Definitely excited. Time travel to the date of production has been used to great effect in The Voyage Home (TOS movie), Past Tense (DS9) or Future's End (VOY), and all of those were great.

Yeah those were good episodes although Past Tense was set in 21st century not 1990s. We’re approaching that time period and awaiting these Sanctuary Districts to be formed. Fortunately we’ve avoided the Eugenics wars of the late 20th century 😂

Funny how in 2005 Star Trek was cancelled due to franchise fatigue after five shows spanning almost 40 years but suddenly it’s perfectly ok to have 5 churned out at the same time.

Anything that makes money for the streaming platforms. But hey, as long as they keep being the quality they've released so far, I'm not complaining

I’m hoping so but there’s the danger of prequel that things are included because they have to be and we expect it and anything else looks out of place kinda like the Xindi war and the Suliban in Enterprise

That’s going to make it five on the go at once now and these aren’t on TV as such, bloody paramount plus unless you’re still in a region where they haven’t taken it off Netflix and Amazon

I forgot about this topic. So far it’s mostly good but the recurring star fleet is compromised theme and bringing back old favourite characters to kill them is as tiresome as ever. What are your thoughts and feelings? Wish they’d reunited the next gen crew earlier as the damn season is almost over already!

I never really watched it either but I enjoyed the new movies and then found Discovery. A lot of people say to start at next generation. I get confused with all of the time jumps!
Title: Re: Star Trek: Picard

The third season is a huge improvement over the previous two seasons. The pace is a bit too slow sometimes though. There are only three episodes left and I have the impression that not much has happened so far. And we haven't seen nearly anything of one member of the crew.

I became familiar with Star Trek through the movies, and for a long time that was all I knew. When I heard about the Picard project I began watching TNG and I've been enjoying it a lot. So my recommendation would be to start with the TNG tv series.
Title: Re: Star Trek: Picard
Post by: Octavia on April 03, 2023, 08:52:29 pm
I started with TNG, but keep in mind that the first couple seasons are more bad than good, it's a bit of a time investment to get into it. Starting with the movies is also not a bad idea.
Title: Re: Star Trek: Picard
Post by: Delta on April 03, 2023, 09:40:55 pm
Personally not a fan of the reboot movie trilogy. Decent generic sci-fi, but not really representative of what Star Trek is.

I think the best movies to get started on are probably the Genesis trilogy. Wrath of Khan, Search for Spock, Voyage Home. Afterwards, Undiscovered Country. That should cover the good Kirk movies, which is where I feel Star Trek really became what it was through the peak of its run. Movies 1 and 5 are more supplementary material for the die-hard fans, they are just not that good. 1 is a long-outdated visual effects showcase with poor pacing, and 5 is basically a Mary Sue fic directed by Kirk's actor.

Afterwards, I agree that TNG is a good choice. Due to its very episodic nature, it is very possible to just pick some highly-rated episodes to get going with instead of just watching it front-to-back. Might even be recommendable to watch a few fan favorites to get some good impressions. The first two seasons were by far the roughest, so starting out with that gives you something that is not really representative of what the show can be at its best.

The show is over and I can say that the last season has been the best hands down. A nice goodbye to the TNG characters that deserved something better than Nemesis as their final adventure.

Oh yikes that’s a difficult one with almost 60 years for you to catch up on. Next generation was my starting point but back then you only had that show and repeats of the original series. Try next generation first (pilot episodes encounter at farpoint pt 1&2) but mix it up a bit and watch episodes of the original series in between because they do make references to the past show.
