Post by: nudetotheworld on June 16, 2018, 01:03:19 am
Is anyone following/interested in/watching/listening to the FIFA World Cup in Russia?

What are your thoughts on it so far? Which team/s are you going for?

Feel free to update this thread as the World Cup progresses  :azn: However don't give spoilers for those who don't want to hear the scores right away

Did anyone see the Spain vs Portugal game? Unbelievable!

Supporting England but expect it to be the typical disappointment!

I’m watching but I’m surprised that US didn’t qualify this time. :/

Spain vs Portugal was a good one.

This website is good, it has a calendar to add to the iPhones calendar. https://fixtur.es/en/wedstrijden/fifa-2018-russia/ronde/1

Easier than googling all the time for times.

I was a bit saddened with the Australian team's inability to recognise that they were playing a non-contact sport... I felt the French team played slightly better myself, but I guess different perspectives is good

@prodigal_son spain vs cr7 was indeed an unbelievable match. and maybe england can get far, at least they will be more successful than in the last years.

The England game last night was torture! Hopefully not a sign of things to come. I felt like Tunisia stopped us playing and getting a rhythm with constant fouling and a desire to settle for an ill-gained draw.

As a Korean, I want to root for South Korean team, but after watching their recent game vs. Sweden, I lost hope.
Also their football association is very corrupt and in denial.

I'm rooting for Iceland right now though. They are quite good, and did you know that the team members have different jobs? (their head coach is a part-time dentist!)

I personally think Portugal will win, given that their team is in excellent shape with Ronaldo in it.

That makes me think about Russia considering that they get banned from the Olympics and something fishy could be going on with Russia in the WC. Haha, maybe nothing shady is going on.

What is everyone’s thoughts on VAR?

The penalty given to Iran was the worst decision I’ve ever see! That decision has changed the final table for Group B and therefore the next round of the competition.

The Spanish team won't be complaining after their stoppage time equaliser against Morocco last night which was initially disallowed by the ref was overturned by VAR.

I'm Korean, and believe it or not, the last game with the Germans was glorious for everyone.

I didn't understand why Manuel Neuer decided to leave his net during the game though. I was so confused, and he was the biggest cause for that second goal by Son Heung-min.

Also, I'm glad that Koreans didn't get the second runner-up spot, given that they'd face Brazil for the following game (which would've inevitably been a done deal).

Neuer came forward because they were already losing with only a few minutes remaining. They may as well lose 10-0 as 1-0, it’s still a loss, but if they could equalise by having an extra attacking player they wouldn’t be eliminated.

I honestly don't know who to root for at this point so I might give my game by game predictions(?) lol

Brazil vs Belgium... I think Brazil might have the upper hand with Neymar but I really can't count out how well Belgium has been playing.

Uruguay vs France... Uruguay has been absolutely killing it this World Cup and they have a great chance of winning but I think this one could be a close one and end in kicks.

I'll update on the other two games together but this is my prediction from halfway paying attention so please correct me if I'm wrong about anything here.

In fact, Croatia has somehow hung in there by the skin of their teeth - lucky to win last 2 games via penalty shootouts.

2. Belgium V Croatia 3rd place game on Saturday

they may be ranked 20th globally but they have made it this far and have beat the odds against them even if they won by penalties shoot out, as athletes have always no matter the win, the win is still a win

In spite of being Ranked so LOW, reaching the SF has been nothing short of a MIRACLE for them. England will finally end the Croatian dream run today...

Croatia is the one of the 3 biggest Underdogs to ever reach the Semis:

Croatia in 2018
Turkey in 2002
Bulgaria in 1994

I do NOT see Croatia advancing any further.

If England wins the World Cup, it'll be a diplomatic nightmare for the players who have to shake hands with Putin
Harry Kane and the boys are resolutely ignoring all that novichok business. Fine, but what happens when they have to get all chummy with this aggressive near-dictator? Can they snub him?

Croatia is ranked as low as 20 in World Ratings. They have been lucky so far and maybe their luck runs out today. Such a low ranked team winning is unheard of...

Anyways, the French surely know what to drink and how to party: there were huge Celebrations in Paris today for the equivalent of their biggest day in the calendar.

Tomorrow, the Celebrations will continue with the French team enjoying:

1. Wine with Deschamps at Half-time
2. Champagne with Macron at Full-time
3. Vodka with Putin during the FIFA After-party

Coincidentally, Deschamps (the current French Manager) was the ONE who captained France to their 1998 World Cup Victory as well as Euro 2000 Victory. Today is his another date with World Cup destiny.

During their first WC in 1998, it was France who kicked out Croatia during the Semi-Final.

Croatia has NEVER defeated France in any of their previous encounters with France Win record 50%, Draw Record 50% and Lose record as 0%

As they say, HISTORY Repeats itself...

Hugo Lloris is the favorite for BOTH: to lift the 2018 Cup in few hours from now as well as the Golden Glove.

Belgium star Toby Alderweireld has hailed Tottenham pal Hugo Lloris as the best keeper at the World Cup. And he’s warned Croatia they won’t find France as easy as England in today’s showpiece final. “France are very solid at the back, it’s hard to break them down"

Alderweireld is convinced Luka Modric and Co will come up against an Iron Curtain in Lloris in Moscow.

On Sunday French football fans will flock to the city's bars as well as the giant screen that will be erected at the Champs de Mars under the Eiffel Tower in order to watch the final of the World Cup between Les Bleus and Croatia. The fanzone is expected to accommodate up to 90,000 people.
