Title: What musical instrument do you play?
Post by: Karla on January 28, 2010, 11:38:33 am
I ordered a keyless Irish flute from America yesterday morning. I decided that I wanted to get back into playing music again, eventually with the aim of playing celtic music with other people. I went to a pub once where they have live improvised music and I really would have loved to have joined in. I love jamming.

I used to play the guitar a lot as a teenager but gave up after 6 years when I realised that I was only ever going to be playing the blues alone in my bedroom. I also have a mandolin but haven't ever properly learnt to any chords or scales, I just play it by ear. Trouble is that my finger tips aren't tough enough to play it anymore without being ripped to shreds!

I decided to go for a woodwind instrument so I would have more of a challenge learning how to improvise on it and to keep me interested in it.

I'm a drummer, cause it's always fun to jam on the drums and improvise fills, and there's no tuned notes to learn :4345

When I was a kid, I played piano for 2 or 3 years... only.  Left it too soon for my skill to be really interesting unfortunately.
I miss it, and I bought a Roland Juno-D keyboard to have fun with, 3 years ago, but it's taking the dust again  :45

I also have a djembe I like to jam on from time to time ^^  But playing alone is not that fun and I haven't had (or taken) much opportunities to play with other folks.

Playing music again is on my (looong looong and dusty) TODO list... :P

Have been playing the Cello for most of my life, though I stopped having lessons at around age 18. I participated in various orchestras since 1991, but stopped as I approached graduation in uni (around 2008).

Currently, I'm in between places, but I'll be sure to re-enter the hobby orchestra circuit once I have a job and am settled in.

During my studies, I started playing quite a bit of chamber music - for the longest time, I'd hated that. Now? It's the first thing I want, I *need* to restart!

I have a perfectly good bass guitar, tuner, and instructional books sitting in my closet :-(. I think once I pick up a cheap enough amp I'll get off my lazy ass and learn how to play the thing.

I occasionally play the piano (don't get enough time to play it seriously anymore) and used to play trumpet (still got it, but haven't picked it up in ages)

Not hard to learn (or find a cheap amp). Seriously, get off your "lazy ass" and learn! What brand/model bass?

Finally just got my irish flute today. Took ages to get through customs, although not as long as I feared at one point.

My God I'm crap at it!

Practising on beer bottles in the meantime probably helped, but not enough. I keep an empty bottle handy in case I completely lose it and forget how to purse my lips.

Still, makes it more interesting to learn ...

I've had an on-again off-again relationship with the violin since grade school. I haven't touched it for three years now, because I can't seem to find the time, but I intend to get back to it. I'd also like to learn guitar and piano at some point.
Title: Re: What musical instrument do you play?

I've already stated the instruments I know how to play in my introductory post, but for the sake of completion, I suppose they could be included here also.

In chronological order of learning, they are: piano, trumpet, singing (not sure if this is included in the word "instrument"), drum kit, bass guitar, alto saxophone, guitar. I have a couple of violins too (kindly donated to me), but I have intentionally not made any progress with finding a teacher, as I have too little time to devote to learning another instrument at the moment. Starting piano lessons again recently was a major factor in me not deciding to take up the violin at this current time. I am definitely interested in learning one of the orchestral string instruments (except the double bass, since the bass guitar I play is a fretless one, and that's good enough for me).

My life without music would be no life at all.

i wanted to learn the violin because it's sherlock holmsey. but i have the bass guitar too. i like it a little better than the guitar because i can use my fingers  on both hands and feels like i'm doing more. and i can play naked in front of a crowd without it being Rated R  :345678

Well my keyless wooden flute was delivered a few days ago after having spent about a week in customs. It looks like it's been hanging around the workshop quite a while actually, although I know that.

It's a very interesting instrument to play. There are only 6 holes but you can get two or three octaves out it by how you blow it. I am still trying to figure it out, but it's a very subtle combination of blowing soft for the lower octave and harder for the higher octave, but also directing your breath deeper into the mouth hole for the lower and further up against the edge of the mouth hole for the higher octave. If you blow too hard then it goes out of tune, if you don't blow hard enough then you get both higher and lower together (or no note at all). What's more, the amount you blow and where quite where to direct your air changes according to which note you're playing!

Definitely an instrument you just have to learn by experience.

Lovely sound though.

If I could be an expert at any classical instrument and play in an orchestra then it would be the cello. I love Cello concertos. I'm listening to Prokofiev's cello (and also his violin) concertos alot at the moment.

So does anyone here sing - or at least consider themselves to sing fairly well? Has anyone ever sung in a choir? The voice is an instrument too!

For those who play instruments, have you heard of grades? For those that don't know, there are eight of them, measuring technical skill and general knowledge of music. Has anyone here ever done grade exams in their instruments?

I would like to think my singing isn't terrible anyway - but it depends on the range of pitch you want...

Has anyone here ever done grade exams in their instruments?

I am grade 5 in both piano and (jazz) saxophone - but I doubt I could play piano at grade 5 standard any more...

I stopped after grade 4 in piano when I was 11. Since picking it up again, my teacher seems to think I've not lost anything much, as he would like to put me in for both grade 5 theory and grade 5 practical perhaps sometime this year or early next year - despite the fact that I consider myself to be extremely rusty! I also have grade 5 in drum kit and grade 4 in singing. I would eventually like to go all the way up to grade 8 in an instrument though, and for now, this looks most likely to be piano (hence why my teacher would like to put me in for grade 5 theory), although I had studied some grade 8 material for both drum kit and bass guitar some years ago.

So Karla, how's the Irish flute going?

So Karla, how's the Irish flute going?

I can't put it down.

I'm mainly working from home at the moment and the flute just sits next to me. Whenever I need to pause and think about my work I just pick it up and start playing a little tune on it for a few seconds. Anything really. And when I run out of ideas I just make funny noises with it to see what I can do. It beats getting distracted by browsing the web.

The wooden keyless irish flute sounds absolutely gorgeous for an instrument.

Already got my eyes on getting a better flute so I can play with other people. Although I suppose I also need other people to play with.

Post by: Ash196 on March 11, 2010, 11:26:37 pm
Karla, I have just been to YouTube and seen a couple of videos of a guy named Ryan Thomson playing a wooden Irish flute. Is this the same kind of instrument you have? It sounds beautiful and warm. Am I right in thinking that because it's keyless, it's a sort of cross between a standard flute and a recorder? It looks so from the videos I saw.

I used to play the (treble) recorder in primary school, and my sister used to play the flute. I have had a few goes on her flute a couple of years ago (since she doesn't play it any more) but never could get the mouth technique right. Perhaps I haven't persevered enough. It would be nice to get a decent sound out of it someday, but I haven't had the time unfortunately, due to having to concentrate solely on piano for the foreseeable future.

I hope you can find other musicians to play with. If not, perhaps we could get a jam session going over the internet, using llcon? Of course, that would depend on you owning a microphone and a decent sound card, though. I only just found out about the software myself, so I haven't had a chance to give it a go yet. It would certainly be an interesting learning experience, even if it proves unfruitful.

I've been playing drums for 5 years now, and I've self-taught myself. I've had basically the same kit for the whole time but I've customised it to make it a lot better than what it was

This is what I originally got but only in silver:

But I've replaced the cymbals, which frankly you could have snapped in half easily :345678
I've now added:
14" Stagg Crash
16" Headliner Pro Crash
20" Headliner Pro Ride
10" Stagg Splash
14" Stagg China

And I'm hoping to get some Remo skins for Christmas :)

Holy crap! This is 1 day short of the 1 year anniversary of my last post, on page 1!

So... turns out I really was going through a creative crisis. And it turns out that I really needed to get back into it, and specifically into chamber music.

In autumn I got to play a little solo in a concert; I rejoined a uni orchestra; in December I was a prostitute (played for money at hokey Christmas cash-ins); played serious Bach cantatas in a special event (accompanying recitatives with only a cembalo to back you up = scarier than any solo); and now, I am finally catching up with every teenager's dream: a few friends and I have founded a cello quartet to play some Apocalyptica stuff. My current favourite:

Apocalyptica - Bittersweet live, from their life burns DVD (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RURZurQt1kQ#normal)

though this one rocks quite hard:

Apocalyptica - Creeping Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4iGNIcbYmg#normal)

Can't wait to get it up to similar (speed) levels!!

I feel like I've progressed in leaps and bounds recently. Sadly, the sureness of my left hand is still not what I'd like it to be; but mastery over tone quality has quickly risen to old levels and - as I spend more time on the instrument than ever before - quickly surpassed them.

The times may not be good - but this certainly is!

edit: oops about the double post of Bittersweet. Fixed now!

I have, or have access to, a range of musical instruments -- piano, guitar, Appalachian dulcimer, metal Irish flute, bodhran -- and I play them all equally well, which is not saying much I'm sorry to report.  It is said that "an moron can play a bodhran" (1) but it seems I am the exception to the rule.  I like the dulcimer best because it is very portable and works well with bagpipes.  I love the sound of pipes by the way -- genetic inheritance I suppose -- and tried to learn to play them for a couple of years.  But I gave it up after being asked (begged!) to stop. (2)  I can sing though, or I think I can.  At least no one ever begs me to stop.

Notes:
1. for non-Celts: that rhymes nicely enough
2. definition of a Scottish gentleman -- a Scotsman who can play the bagpipes, but doesn't

The amps are X2 Marshall 8240 stereo chorus valve/state combos and X2 Marshall ministacks (One head and two cabinets for each channel from my Boss ME 20 stereo FX pedal. The guitars are (My Fav) a blue Fender Stratocaster, red Ibanez GAX-70 and my black home built stratocaster. I run two mics into a Digitech mixer/amp. I am presently looking at getting either an Alesis i02 or maybe i04 interface for home recording shortly. There should be a link to a pic of my jamming room below.

I'd like to learn to play a hammered dulcimer......

..... and yes I'm serious.

I heard one out at the Renaissance Festival a couple months ago and absolutely fell in love with the unique sound.....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer_dulcimer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hammer_dulcimer)

Hammered dulcimer is awesome, I totally think you should go for that. My dad used to play some back when he did more music. Hes sold it off a while back, but he still has a mountain dulcimer that was hand made for him out on the East coast. Great sound to dulcimers. :) Good luck with it.

I began fiddling around with my dad's lap dulcimer this evening, and have learned a few songs already, and can play 1 of them well, even. Thus, I now play dulcimer, banjo, Irish flute, harmonica, and almost bagpipes (still on the practice chanter, saving up for full set.).

My voice is my musical instrument!

I always think of my musical instruments as my voice actually.

I also played the clarinet for about 7 years, and I used to play the piano, but if I tried it now I'd have to completely relearn how  :56789

I have recently been contemplating the clarinet. I have recently started playing the silver flute as I got bored with wooden keyless flutes. I do like the tone of wooden wind instruments though. Clarinets have a wooden tone, have keys and can be very expressive but I have heard that if you are good with the embrochure of either the flute or clarinet, it will be at the cost of your embrochure of the other.

i learned to play the Euphonium when i was... 9 i think, then quickly picked up the trumpet and trombone. then i learned to play the guitar too, and now I'm quite fluent at playing:

Euphonium
Trumpet
Cornet
Trombone
Bass Trombone
Tuba
French Horn
Guitar
Bass Guitar
Banjo
Mandolin
Ukulele
Xylophone

and all those little instruments in between. I'm hoping that list keeps on growing as life progresses :)

I've been playing bass guitar for over 20 years now (god i'm getting old) in played in all sorts of bands in all sorts of styles, including pop, blues, power metal, soul, jazz...

But my biggest dream of all came true when I started learning to play the double bass in my mid-twenties. I have played in several symphonic orchestra's since then.

I also play a bit of piano, but don't really excel at that. I can play the first page of my favorite piano concerto's though :)

I can't remember if I've answered this. I used to play the saxophone, but that was back in grade school. I've come to not like it as much because it can't typically play soft (unloud) and I didn't like how the reed sometimes felt like it might give me a papercut. I wouldn't mind learning the guitar, though it's disappointing that it's a bit cliche of an instrument.

Mostly drum set, with a little bit of brass and piano thrown in. I grew up playing jazz and Afro-Cuban stuff (I had a great Brazilian drum teacher). I've gotten way into Balinese music lately (youtube "gamelan") and am hoping to break into Tibetan dranyen music this summer. I'm an ethnomusicologist, so I guess all of this kind of makes sense... :D

The dranyen is official now! I just played my first song for a few thousand people at the Dalai Lama's birthday celebration. I love Tibetan music!

The next song I'm learning is a song about a mountain - it's probably the coolest thing I've ever heard.

I am totally ashamed to say none and I went to a music school too.  The shame is deep.  Considering 70% of the year I was in could play very competently.  I used to be able to do a basic keyboard but have lost the skills to do this now.  But I do have a didgeridoo though that I purchased in Oz many years ago from an Aborigine shop.  Just cannot do the circular breathing.

I played piano and flute as a teen, though sadly I stopped practicing a long time ago.  Now I play the Irish whistle, the bodhran (an Irish drum), and the Great Highland Bagpipes.  Admittedly I'm not the greatest piper out there yet, but I'm hoping to be able to play with the local pipe and drum band eventually.

Well I'm pretty sure I've posted that I play guitar, but since then I have taught myself how to use a synthesiser (plugins synths of course, as hardware synths are quite pricey). I love them because if you can imagine a sound, you can make it, given enough time to tweak around   :54 :azn:

I'm a drummer (this explains my avatar ). I play drums in several kind of bands. First one is a big symphony orchestra. We play classical, jazz, pop, film, musical and lots of other stuff. Secondly, a marching band. And once in a while we play with an "oompah-band" at local annual parties and German Oktoberfests for example. That's much fun.

I also play piano, and in the past a little organ.

Definitely, one instrument I cannot play is guitar.
