Anyone here learning a language through the Duolingo app?
-
I tried French through Duolingo and Babbel. I'm not doing well on either... haha
What're you looking to learn?
-
I thought duolingo was great
-
I used to use duolingo to use French. I find it's really good to learn the basics, but when it comes to more complex conversational things you may need other apps to help along with Duolingo.
-
I haven't tried it yet.... I know I would be too inconsistent in using it :confused
-
I am learning Italian on Duolingo.
-
I've tried it for Japanese, but I ended up using lingodeer instead which works a lot better for Asian languages.
-
I'm currently using Duolingo for Japanese. On a side note I noticed one day that they have options to learn Klingon and High Valeryian, but not any for the languages J.R.R. Tolkien made up for his works and I'm kind of upset about that.
-
I was using Duolingo for Japanese for a while, but it just didn’t feel quite right. I feel like it’s a placebo app that only makes you convinced that you’re actually learning the language even though in reality, you’re simply improving your vocabulary pool and syntax.
It could be a good supplement for actual courses in a language or one-to-one Skype calls or conversation meetups, but I can’t imagine myself learning a language using the app.
But then again, I might just not be suited for this sort of learning style, and it genuinely works.
-
I’m using it for Spanish!! But I’m also taking Spanish in school lol
-
How is it compared to other things like The Rosetta Stone Because I love the use it for Japanese or German some planning on visiting all those countries sometime in the future
-
Trying to use it for Spanish but no getting very far
-
im learning Italian
-
I just finished my Italian course on Duolingo today. I started in August 2018.
-
I'm using Mondly to learn Ukrainian. I like it.
-
I don't know Duolingo app, on the other hand I know the Babbel app.
-
Turkish, because I like going on holidays there :).
-
I tried it ages ago, and didn't stick with it. I think i will start it again, given that we will have a few weeks of lockdown and plenty of time on our hands.
-
i am
-
My Klingon streak is at 425 days now... what am I doing with my life? :happy
-
I was learning Norwegian and Spanish, but the course was so slow that I lost interest
-
Totally! I’m actually using it very often now to learn Spanish! ¡Duolingo es lo mejor para aprender español!
-
Currently working through German and Swedish. Really love duolingo!
Interessant, warum genau diese beiden Sprachen?
(Interessing, why this languages?)
I tried also to learn scandinavian languages, and started with dansk in babbel, but I made a too big break so I think I have to start again.
-
Don't upset the owl or else!
-
I used it for a while to polish up my French, I don't think it's that great since it doesn't explain the rules very well, ones I luckily already knew because of taking french in middle school. But it's free and every bit helps. I've been using it a bit for Spanish but you have to supplement it with reading on the rules of the language and asking actual language speakers.
-
I've used Duolingo before. I would always be enthusiastic for the first few days but then just lose interest in it. I guess that's more on me than the app.

I didn't know, MERCI for your feedback. :cheesy:
-
not to brag, but i've got a spanish streak of over 260 days and counting
-
Duolingo is good, but it definitely shouldn't be the only tool that anyone uses. Imo it doesn't teach grammar particularly well, or nuances that make various languages unique. Nothing wrong with it, but it won't get you fluent on its own

Agreed. I'm learning japanese on duolingo now. Its okay to learn some vocab and to have basic basic conversations maybe. Like introduction and stuff.
-
I learn Spanish with Duolingo. I find the app very good for the fact that it is free.
I miss a bit the explanations to the units but because you have so many repetitions you can derive it well.

update: 500 days and counting. still totally not bragging

For me it's been 500 days of avoiding Duolingo notifications and counting. Not bragging or anything.
Don't lose your streak. You're doing good learning a new language.

I’ve been learning Dutch but only like ten minutes a day

I’ve been learning Dutch but only like ten minutes a day
Can I ask why you chose Dutch? not many people learn Dutch since it is not such a wide spread language :P

I’d like to visit the Netherlands one day. Plus I like to be different and not go for the obvious choice.

That's really cool. In the Netherlands basically everyone can speak English. That makes it harder to learn when you visit the Netherlands because everyone just starts talking English to you as soon as they hear you're from the UK. But it can also be nice not having to worry about people not understanding you :)

Started using Duolingo a little more than a week ago. I'm learning Norwegian.

Indeed, I was amazed that literally everyone did speak (excellent) English. That’s one of their education pillar.
...just same as in Italy, not?!
Regarding Duolingo, I used it when I moved to Germany while I was attending German classes.
As an app, I find great and good to practice in gamification mode.
Itself isn’t probably sufficient for learning a new language, at least in my case
-
I'm using it with spanish and great for the basics but would need something more to dive deeper.
