My mate and I have tickets, I'm well excited about it.

Well after applying for a whole bunch, we ended up only getting Beach Volleyball, which sounds kind of suspect, but we did try for Athletics, Swimming, Shooting and I wanted some equestrian, I think there will be another release, so I have some money waiting in my UK bank account to try and pick up a few more. There will be a resale as well early next year so fingers crossed.

What do you mean "apply"? You have to apply and then the organization select/raffle the tickets between those who applied?

Yup you have to apply then the applications go in to a draw for each even or random selection etc, they knew they would have to many applications for the events so they set it up that way. As I have a UK bank account I was able to apply in the main draw for the UK saving me a fortune of all the local authorized sellers about 20% on average.

Thanks for the explanation. I think it's a fair method of selection.

In 2014, there will be FIFA World Cup here in Brazil, and Salvador (the city where I live) will be one of the host cities. I'm really looking foward to watch an official World Cup game here, it's gonna be epic! But it'll probably have this same procedure to get tickets, so, besides saving money from now on, I'll must have an amount of luck too!

Was in London three weeks ago - riots aside the place looks like a building site.  Not an encouragement to be back anytime soon.

Well now that we have had the opening ceremony, it's probably time to bump this thread!

I'm very curious as to what non-Brits thought of the opening ceremony.

I rather liked it.  I don't really care about the artsy stuff, but it was good.  I liked that the London cauldron is even more complex and elaborate than the 2010 Vancouver one, and it even worked properly, so... yeah Britain.  Also, everything is better with Mr Bean.

I liked the bit where Voldermort hovered over the NHS while JK Rowling, a woman who has publically called for rich people to pay more taxes, read out some JM Barrie. Barrie left the rights to Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street hospital, an act of philanthropy which encouraged others and ultimately led to the NHS. David Cameron must have shuffled awkwardly in his seat at that bit.

The start seemed very Lord of the Rings though, I knew there were 9 rings for men, 7 for dwarves and 3 for elves (doh!), but 5 for the Olympic Committee?

Oh, and for additional Lord of the Rings influence, never mind the start depicting the Souring of the Shire, does anyone see a resemblence here?

Bradley Wiggins, what a champion.

Most medals of any Brit in Olympic history, less than two weeks after winning one of the most difficult sporting challenges in the world. Fantastic.

I worked at some of the events for the 2010 Winter Olympics, which was pretty grueling. I'm actually following these Olympics a lot more than I followed the 2008 Summer Olympics or even the 2012 Winter Olympics though. I suppose it's because I love the UK.

Conveniently, I imagine the Mail will have forgotten Mo's heritage, or where Jessica Ennis' dad came from. Same as with Chris Froome etc. etc.

Oh cynicism...

So... I think I have calmed down enough, so I will ask now:  Anyone else see the Canada US Women’s Soccer game?  And a follow up: Why does it always seem that when an Olympic judge or ref is involved in a sport, Canada seems to get fucked the worst?

Sometimes they do hit their head on the platform, sometimes gymnasts break bones, weightlifters herniate organs, cyclists get road rash, lugers fly off tracks, skiers die... That's sports.

For athletes as well as for many of us in “real life”: The performance you can provide is often depending on many other people who work on the success in your environment. Many wheels are interlocked and are responsible, each asset and help can be crucial. Some of you will know this from your own life. You needn’t to be a top athlete or a top team member, for many it is alike in the workplace or in other hobbies, that a team is a more or less large part of success.

Particularly good results are often only possible if one knows his subject completely, has a little fortune and of course a strong team in the background. A team that supportes one another, takes the load off each other and makes sure that all athletes can reach their best performances. Good managers, good coaches, good concepts and strategies, simply it all must be consistent to provide a peak performance. I'm certainly not a top athlete :lipsrsealed: , but I still think that I really appreciate a good, experienced team in many areas of life. In particular, of course, where there’s blood, sweat and tears involved.

The more I am pleased that the German Olympic team in London was able to celebrate a great success last night (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=auto&tl=en&u=spiegel.de%2Fsport%2Fsonst%2Folympia-2012-fromm-gewinnt-bronze-im-taekwondo-a-849471.html): Helena Fromm (http://www.spox.com/de/sport/diashows/0808/Olympia/Teakwando/helena-fromm/helena-7.jpg) won the bronze medal in taekwondo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Taekwondo). This is the second medal for Germany since the successful Olympic debut 12 years ago in Sydney. Something to chuckle about: she defeated an Australian in the battle for 3rd place.

Why am I telling you all this? Because I am extremely happy for a nice woman I met here and also in the German forum and I know how much heart and blood is involved in the things she deals with. This year, she couldn’t take part as an active athlete due to some circumstances, maybe it works for 2016 in Rio de Janeiro. Therefore my congratulation is not only aimed at the Olympic athlete, but also to a cog in the wheel, a local supporter of the German Taekwondo team at the 2012 Olympics in London: my "colleague" in the German forum, the moderator Lisa (http://internationalyn.org/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=211)!  I'm looking forward to your reports! Come back healthy, and soon!

Just felt a need to gloat. Managed to get tickets for the Beach Volleyball as well as the Mens 100 metre finals. Bloody amazing seeing Mr Bolt run as well as hearing the entire stadium roar when Mo Farrah got presented his gold medal.
And to Mitt Romney - f*** ***! We have done a bloody good job with the Olympics!

and what about Mr Bean....brilliant in the Opening Ceremony.
Moment of the Olympics for me was Katie Taylor's gold medal in the boxing. Nerves shredded waiting for the result. She's incredible and so humble! She's Gold!
