Hey all, just curious as to how many people out there do martial arts and if they have done it nude. I have done different styles my whole life and have practiced TSD with one of my friends alot in my house nude
-
That sounds fun, how did you get your friend to join you? I learn Tai Chi and also from this year, Yoga, though I know yoga's not really a martial art! Sometimes I practice Tai chi nude in my room, just by myself though. Normally I need more space to do the full performance so I go outside. I did once practice on the beach in just trunks and someone asked me about it in Italian (I was in Italy). It was nice with the lapping of the waves.
-
I used to do Tae Kwon Do. I miss those days! Maybe when I've got more time :)
EDIT: Never done it naked, though.
-
I do freestyle karate and dabble in a bit of bjj. I haven never done it naked but would imagine that the constant grabbing, hitting and body rubbing would cause some skin irritation. Not to mention how I would secure a box!
I suppose it could be not nude if it was just kata or technique
-

Same here - tae kwon do!

Same of anything... TKD, left because of time :(
-
I used to do TKD as a youngster, but that was before my nudest days so I have never tried it naked. I feel that doing the practices in the nude in front of a mirror would be the same as doing yoga in the nude as it would let you, and your instructor, see how your body is moving. As both of them are about body control, just with different reasoning behind them.
-
I've tried a little bit judo this year, but not naked. ;)
Anyway, I don't think that judo is well suited for being practised naked, since grabing the kimono is a crucial part of the practice!
-
i did do boxing and mma style kikboxing till my motorbike crash :( 10 years of sport down the drain :(

Shame, but doing sport is never time wasted - I bet your better off for it than not.
-
I would like to try Krav Maga
-
Israeli combat pragmatism that involves techniques like "get a long hard object and hit'em in the nuts"?

i lost 93% use of my left arm and my pain levels are too high to continue :( but on the bright side i do have somthing to work for every day i feel my arm getting stronger :)

I am a tae kwon do player. I used to compeet for the uk and in 2007 i placeds third in the country. Shortly after that i injured my hip and had to retire ( i was 24 and getting old in compeeting terms so i took it as a sign). I am now an instructor at an accadamey in macclesfield and i teach three times a week.
Never done it naked though cos of the getting kicked in the nutts issue.

I was wondering if there are any other martial artists that frequent this website? I have been studying traditional Japanese budo for six years now and I'm about halfway to getting my instructor's license. Specifically, I study Aikido, Karate, Judo, Jujitsu, and Iaido. If anybody has any interest or questions about the martial arts, feel free to ask and I'll do my best to answer them, or at the very least, find an answer.
Also, have this: (https://scontent-a-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash2/576455_3983783920189_1017834500_n.jpg)
It's me practicing an Aikido technique. (Sokumen iriminage, if you speak the language)
-
I honestly have to say, martial arts is something I would not at all want to do without clothes. Not only would the traditional training atmosphere be greatly diminished, but grappling with a naked man would be way too awkward.
-
I did karate when I was younger. I only got to orange belt though.
-
Karate is really great for kids, especially sport karate. The competition factor is great motivation.
-
That's pretty cool, the Filipino martial arts are particularly effective. We practice a lot of Kali and Arnise hand trapping and rattan flow drills, along with Wing Chun and Karate hand trapping techniques. I really enjoy that type of training.
-

I'm afraid I have to disagree on one aspect of Karate for children. I did Karate as a kid because it was the only martial art locally available. I did it for several years. Throwing your arms out in punches damages the joints over time. Once in all those years the instructor told me not to lock my joints when punching but it didn't make any sense as a child so I continued. As with hill-walking, you don't really appreciate your how you are damaging your joints until you start getting problems with them.
-
Few years ago I started muai thai, unfortunately I had to stop practicing it in the club because I couldn't afford the gear which was needed to continue.
I would really like to start practicing martial arts again.

I have to agree with fishlover. I have seen a lot of kids come and go through our dojo and even more through our international organization. We are very careful with the types of techniques and exercises that we teach to our younger students. Only the safest techniques are taught, anything that would cause damage during the developmental years are omitted from the children's curriculum. (Things like maki wara training, which conditions the arm bones and striking points of the knuckles and balls of the feet for striking hard targets or blocking with force.) It seems that you were the unfortunate victim of an instructor who was not teaching correctly, possibly one of the dreaded McDojos that are so prevalent throughout the world. Unfortunately, there are many people who open martial arts schools who simply aren't qualified to teach, or have very little actual experience with teaching. Of course, any physical activity or sport that you take part in will wear down your body over time. The way I see it, I would rather have sore muscles and joints from living a long and active life, than be unable to do physical activity because I am too out of shape to move my body effectively. I'd rather end up old and worn out than let my muscles and cardiovascular system atrophy because I didn't put forth the effort to stay physically fit.
But that's just my opinion, I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on the matter!

I'm a blackbelt in Tang Soo Do (Soo Bahk Do). I'm only an "Il Dan" (1st Degree Black Belt) and that's partly due to inconsistent practice/dojang membership the last couple years. I've been practicing for about six years now though.
(http://s23.postimg.org/7pemiq8fb/P1020976.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/7pemiq8fb/)
This one is of me just after I started training while stationed in Korea.
(http://s23.postimg.org/inpw0wx0n/P1020982.jpg) (http://postimg.org/image/inpw0wx0n/)
This is me the day I was awarded my green belt.
Sadly, I didn't have a working camera when I got my red or black belts. I am planning on joining the local dojang again soon and getting back into regular practice. I want my "E Dan" and "Sam Dan" belts so I can be an instructor (3rd and 4th Degree belts).
-
That's awesome, man! Tang Soo do is a really good Korean art, lots of great kicking techniques. I've not had the chance to study it personally, but we were taught a bit about it during many of our martial arts history lectures. Congrats on the 1st dan, very few people make it that far.

Thanks, MountainHiker! I'm quite proud of my accomplishments so far, and I'm excited about getting back into it full-time. I miss the regular training, and I really want to be an instructor.
Also, as a side note...my father also studied the same style, and only made it to a purple belt...so this is the one (and likely only) thing that I have accomplished in life better than my father has
-
Don't sell yourself short, I'm sure there are plenty of things you are more accomplished at than your father. Besides, you've got a lot of life left to live!
-
when I was a few years younger I took a self defence karate I believe called san chen ru (ps im a horrible speller for words I don't know or other languages) and I only got to green belt, other than that my brother has taught me a few techniques of the armies training and I have learned a few police tactics from my law classes
-

I was being a bit facetious, but thank you anyway!

i have been in hap ki do since i was 5

judo
-
Wow, it's really cool to see so many martial artists coming out of the woodwork. It's good to know that there are others out there who share my passion.
-
:3456 well I just started training wushu, and to be honest I injured my knee in two days :45. It is not as easy as it looks like. Can't wait for my knee to pull it back together so I can continue. It is amazing how much you can do with your body if you just give it a try. My bf did some karate, and because of my crazy family I have never been alowed to train something so I do have this burning wish to do my best at wushu and show them I am more than just a potatoe on sofa..
-
grappling with a naked man would be way too awkward.
Speak for yourself ;).
Nah, just kidding.

You know, it would really depend on the guy... I might make an exception to that, if it were in private and he was incredibly attractive. Maybe. I generally don't roll that way.
-
I don't know if you'd call it a martial art, but I've been doing Krav Maga for a while until work got in the way. Luckily it looks like I have tons of free time now, so I get to head back to the gym. woo! I'm about to be a friggen beast.
-
I started Tae Kwon Do Chung Do Kwan when I was 12. Got a black belt in that, dabbled in MMA, and I've never had a single joint injury or anything major really, even playing some college football.
-
I guess you could say I'm self taught. I'm a good fighter, and I'm different in the sense that I fight logically, not physically. My friend Max and I fight for fun (don't worry, we have rules & precautions), and he's more physically fit than I am, but I usually win anyways.
-
Dude, if there're any martial arts schools in your area and it's within the realm of possibility to do so, you should get some training. It's good for body, mind, and sanity!

I ain't gots no quarters, though!
-
Like I said, if it's in the realm of possibility, you should do it. Maybe someday soon you'll earn enough bits to earn your keep in a good dojo/gym/martial arts school. Or you could go full poser and watch a bunch of crappy youtube videos on how to 'wrassle', make videos, post them up so we can see them and laugh... Yeah, don't do that.
-
I'd never be able to hold my own against a real martial artist. I've tried. It did not fare long.
-
With a bit of training, I'm sure you'd be just fine.

And with a bit more training, you'd be awesome!

I teach TSD but with a different association. I also have a history in TKD, American karate, and BJJ
I love martial arts its basically my life lol.
Me and a few friends have done BJJ in jockstrap much much more difficult to do because there are no way to do lapel grabs
-
My "me kwon do" combat is a natural fighting sense, even though I rarely fight. I like to focus on critical points of force and manipulate them. Example: Imagine someone tries to punch me. My natural reaction is to grab his wrist and roll him over my back. I rarely fail at that one, but in all fairness it is merely a simple trick.

seems like u know basics, you should try find a school and hone your skills and broaden them
-
I agree. Should you ever find yourself in a situation where you can train, you should do it. It's a worthwhile endeavor, I can assure you.
-
I studied Shoalin Kempo with United Studios of Self Defense for a couple months. I managed to earn my Yellow Belt, but I had to quit when I moved home from Denver. There aren't any United Studios Dojos nearby.
-
Yep. Tae kwon do player for 12 years. I used to compete but now I am just an instructor.

If there is ever going to be a need for nude martial arts meetings I think we have a nice crew here ;) P.S. every bunny was kung-fu wrapping.. Those presents were fast as lightning.. :)

I'm a second degree black belt in Karate. College has trimmed down my involvement, but I'm still not to shabby at martial arts!

I dig the Link Avatar^
-
Yeah me too.
-
I did Tae Kwon Do for just over a year when I was younger, people were impressed with how flexible I was.
-
Hmm.. I just thought.. I just grab the enemy and give him a suplex. Or a Final Atomic Blaster!!!
-

I would love to teach TSD. There is a dojang here in town that I'd love to train in to get back into (proper) practice, but it costs money that I don't have at the moment. When I left Korea my master told me to get into teaching because he felt I'd be good at it. I wish I'd listened to him sooner.
-
Well i was doing Mai thai kick boxing if that count :D
-
yeah man I do bjj and mma been doing it for about 3 years full time it the best
-
I've trained in Okinawan shorin-ryu karate since I was 9 and got my black belt in 2007. Haven't had the chance to train much recently, though. I haven't been around the dojo much since I left for college.
-
Oh thats cool. I have some experience of shotokan and wodo ryu but I know very little abut Okinawan shorin-ryu. What's it like?
-
The fun part about this is when I do a martial arts pose.. Say for wing tsun.. I instantly become a martial arts master!! Well.. The advantage of being Asian.. Lol!
-

I'm not sure how to explain it. haha. I guess I'd say it's more straightforward without as many flowy or circular movements. If that makes sense.
-
Ah yes. So is it based on straight line push/pull motion like tae kwon do?
-

I don't know much about tae kwon do, but that sounds about right.
-
It stands to reason since tkd is karate based.
-
Where my martial artists at?!
-
Everything I know I learned from the movie Kill Bill
-
Ooh, the five point palm exploding heart technique... Pai Mei never taught that to anyone! Lol
-
He taught it to the person he felt would use it right

Haven't been actively practising muay thai for a long time, just tried to keep up mobility and strenght training.
But I would like to add a new routine this summer/fall - or a new art completely.

Muy Thai is a fantastic striking Martial art, if you're considering another, I'd recommend jujitsu/judo or Brazilian jujutsu. It's a really good idea to train in an art that teaches throws and ground grappling along with a striking art. It think it makes for a more well rounded skill set.

Jujitsu and judo are bot good options, but best practiced with a partner, I think. With Muay Thai, I can do shadow boxing and generally practice footwork by myself. Last few years there has been a group holding courses in wing chun, of which I was intrigued, but never attended - because I was waiting for a better time. I am regretting that I didn't attend when I had the chance

I myself have practiced tae-kwon-do. I am even a black belt in it. I did pretty well in it.
-
I have no experience in any but I would love to take some BJJ classes.

I studied Aikijitsu, karate, jujitsu, and Iaijitsu with the Yama Nami Bujitsu Kai for about 8 years. I recently got permission from my instructor to open my own Dojo, which to me, is a really big deal. Studied a bit of taekwondo along the way. I definitely have a special place in my heart for martial arts.
-
Well for me i have no real martial arts training, but i have a pair of nunchuks and some kali stick that i am able to use pretty well.

I do HEMA, specifically Viking re-enactment, and I'm thinking about taking up krav maga

Thank you! I definitely don't consider myself a master, but I am finally at instructor level after all these years. That definitely feels good.

Definitely better to practice grappling martial arts with an instructor and training partners. One of the things I liked about Karate, especially Okinawan Karate, is the ability to practice skills by yourself on your own time. Kata can be a really useful tool for training at home.
-
I've done a bit of Taekwondo and Karate, but no meaningful amount because it was making my growing pains worse.
I think it'd be good to learn one of them, or a new one entirely in a bright future where the two words "social" and "distance" aren't next to each other in the same sentence! :laughing
what do you mean by "growing pains" ?

Anyone in Maryland looking for martial arts practice friends/partners? I practice Tai chi and Baguazhang. Grappling and Muay Thai experience also.
