Has anyone else ever dabbled into character/world building? In any form really. It's one of my personal passions.
-
i guess i have, although it's not something i just wake up one day and decide to do. it helps to have toiled on one project for years and consistently have new ideas about what to change retroactively

I agree with that approach. I've been working on my world building project for at least a year now.

I have done stuff like this quite a few times, actually, I really enjoy it. I'd like to become an author and/or screenwriter someday, and in the meantime I love worldbuilding projects, it's really fun to figure out how a world will work and what the ramifications of that are.
-
Tolkein was a genius at this. It's so important to create the illusion that a fictional world is real. It has to be taken absolutely seriously even if it's the most ridiculous place. I love Lord if the Rings and it works because Tolkein abides by his rules. It's fascinating.

I've been trying to get more detailed in the social structure and affairs of my world. It's difficult to plant that web when you have such an overhead view of the world you're creating.

I am not the most well read on the works of Tolkien but of what I've seen I can definitely agree with you. Another example that comes to mind is DnD. The magic in that world almost feels material. It's so detailed and structured that it feels like an actual field of science you could study. That's just what I absolutely love about that world. It takes high fantasy and makes it feel real.

I mess around with it sometimes, but usually achieve very little with it lol. I have some vague thematic ideas, a WIP map, and maybe two WIP proto-languages

I wish I had the artistic skill to make an actual map for mine.

i made several maps for my world when i was... younger, and they're clearly identifiable and legible, but significantly less so when you take into account the fact that i was 11, not a great artist and using an un-erase-able pen

Yeah I did the same when I was little on the wooden coffee table. Except it wasn't a map and it wasn't legible.

I just used a map generator and raised the resolution before making my own take on it in a drawing program :')

I have a basic idea of where I want the places I've made to be. Not very concrete but just basic directions.

The issue with map generators I’ve had is there’s never enough control over things like the shape of the landmass or the location of towns. I’ve tried to find a proper map creator, but so far there’s been nothing satisfactory

I agree with that. When using an algorithm someone else made you lack a certain level of control. The problem for me is I'm not skilled enough in art or cartography to make a map or a map that's at all convincing. So far I've mostly focused on creating cultures, creatures, and landmarks, then placing then in general areas that makes sense to me. I'll hopefully be able to refine the map as I go on.

The one I used just makes a globe, I still wanted to sort out the details of everything myself, even though I never get around to it

Yeah, I feel you lol. I need to just start working on cultures etc

I haven't looked into it but I might have to now

my problem is I know my limitations; I can't create names or personalties. and I tend to get distracted in back-stories, oops
which sucks, because I have alot of worlds I try to create

Everyone has their limitations. I sure do. Just gotta work on those aspects you're bad at. I can only write things down so my main limitation is not knowing any artistic skill.
