Title: video game soundtracks
Post by: Gman707 on March 26, 2012, 11:02:16 pm
Some one had started a thread on video game soundtracks on another form i use and it has been a really interesting thread so i thought id start it here.

The question is what is your favorite video game sound track?

My favorite over all soundtracks are mass effect, halo and final fantasy. Other good ones are skyrim, fallout new vegas and okami. I also own the soundtrack cds to tekken 5 and 6 and street fighter 4. I think these games have the perfect music for a beat em up. Resident evil is very good at using a subtle soundtrack and silence to create tension.

Music in videogames is more important to me than graphics. It sets the tone, adds to tension and makesset pieces feel more epic.

I have to agree with skyrim as it really allows you to feel what is going on in the game. Other than that I love the music in Fallout 3..not really my favorite genre of music but I really enjoyed the music. I also like how games like saints row and GTA allow you to choose the radio station. While it doesnt add to certain scenes or parts of the game, it adds a sense of realism.

Fallouts soundtrack is amazing. It is so mournful most of the time but then there are these cues of  country music that pops up and adds a kind of irony and carry-on-regardless spirit

Not sure if you have played Fallout 3(It sound like you have) but a perfect example is the "bingo bango bongo I dont want to leave the congo" song. That will probably look real wierd to most but If youv'e played the game youll know what Im talking about. Now...to find the title....

Descent 2 had awesome electronic music.  It was REALLY atmospheric for flying around the mines.
Portal and Portal 2 have terrific songs with lyrics.
Metal Gear Solid had some good stuff, too.

In no particular order: Portal 2, Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and Diablo 2.

(I'm considering getting a minor in Video Game Scoring/Sound Design, as this is something I pay a lot of attention to.)

I think the music in Zelda is beautiful, simple as that; great orchestrations, even if they are sampled (It's a video game, that's really the best way).

Diablo 2 is excellent because of its dissonance and ambience. It doesn't have a clear beginning/end, so it works very well for video games. And it's so creepy sounding; it really creates the feel. Along with the sound of carvers in the distance. =P

Portal 2 does a really good job of incorporating the music into the game. For example, in the beginning scene, listen to the alarm; it starts out as an alarm, but it ends up being the melody of the song, seamlessly transitioning. There are lots of brilliant sound design/synthesis techniques used to get this effect throughout the game. I also geek out at all the awesome FM synthesis used for the percussion sounds.

There are SO many great music composers for games!!!  Of course my roots will always remain with the FF series.  The composer was in interesting guy too.  Pretty cool that he was a self taught musician.

Yeah FF's music is awesome. We went to see the distant worlds tour in london last year. It was awesome and nobu uematsu (the composer) was there. Songs like one winged angel and libre fatali sounded awesome live.

I was just at the Distant Worlds in St. Louis last Friday. I had goosebumps during a few songs (To Zanarkand mostly) and it's hard to go back to the games after hearing them live.

I listen to this stuff when I'm doing homework: http://www.sidmusic.org/sidplay/mac/ (http://www.sidmusic.org/sidplay/mac/)

It's a download with a bajillion C64 tracks and a iTunes-esque player for them. I got way into old NES composers this last summer, and SIDPLAY has most of the greats.

The best part? I'm an ethnomusicologist, and listening to this shiz is legitimate research in the field. Heck yes for sweet undergrad degrees.

The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Legend of Zelda: Windwaker both have great soundtracks. The World Ends With You, despite not having music I would generally like, is actually pretty good as well. Oh, and Skies of Arcadia: Legends has an underrated soundtrack in my opinion.

The world end with you was such a great little game. Its urban soundtrack fit the setting quite well all though i thought it was perhaps a little more new york than tokyo. I wonder if the music was different in the japanese version?

Yeah I'm not sure why they didn't just use J-Pop/J-Rock for the soundtrack. It's not like they used well-known Western tracks for it anyway. I suppose they chose whatever they felt would fit the mood for different sections of the game.

I really appreciate music from video games in particular those from RPGs.
My favourite soundtracks would be those of Final Fantasy 6, 7, Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy Tactics and Secret of Mana.

Persona 3 has one of the better soundtracks I have heard in a game. All the music in that game was brilliantly done, and is pleasant to listen to in almost any setting at any time. I feel the same way for Persona 4. Both games used the same composer and had very laid back and casual music, as well as very pulsed and fast moving music. Final Fantasy is another franchise with great soundtracks. Granted, it was better when Nobuo Uematsu did the soundtracks himself, but the newest work for that series hasn't been too bad either.

It might sound a little bit "kitsch" but Secret of Mana was certainly the first game (of my childhood) whose soundtracks really touched me.

I bought the mass effect soundtrack i was that impressed with it. I would love the el shaddai one too but i can only find it on japanese import and it's supidly expensive.

On a slightly different note, i recently bought dragons dogma. Its a fairly decent rpg with the traditional epic soundtrack but it has this god awful rock song (the singer has been auto tuned) at the menu. Its a very odd choice and it jars with the style of the game.

So many games with soundtracks the I really appreciate, here are some, I will probably miss some out, oh and if otherwise stated, the games mentioned also include its sequels:
Portal
The original Pokémon soundtrack
The Legend of Zelda (especially Ocarina of Time)
Mass Effect
Dead Island
Super Mario
Mario Kart
God of War
Kingdom Hearts

The original Pokémon soundtrack

Seconded on the original Pokémon soundtrack. The music in those games was just so iconic, Junichi Masuda is a genius. There are a bunch of great derivative works based on them too; if you're interested, check out the official "Pokémon Hikerukana?" album, and the Pokémon Reorchestrated project is very good too.

Also, obligatory props to Bastion. Aside from the awesome narrator, the music was what made that game.

Final Fantasy, Medal of Honor and Call of Duty (but the WW II series). Nobuo Uematsu and Michael Giacchino are the best. I once played "Aerith's Theme" on piano for my gf and she loved it.

Oh, a credit must be given for Civilization IV: "Baba Yetu" by Christopher Tin. Love the African ethnic style.

Batman Arkham City, I love the way it is reminiscent of Hans Zimmer's music from the Christopher Nolan batman movies, but still sounding original.

Skyrim, for all the reasons everybody else said.

And the Mass Effect trilogy.  Mass Effect 2 in particular.  The music from the Suicide Mission at the end of Mass Effect 2 especially.  It has an epic, fast passed, frantic energy that perfectly matches the tone of the mission.  It’s probably my favourite video game music ever.  It also sounds very similar to the 11th Doctors theme from Doctor Who.

I'll be the first here to say the classic Mega Man Series. While I'd have to go with Mega Man 2 specifically I feel there's at least one memorable or really good catchy song in each of the games.

To add to my list I'll go with Super Mario World, Mario Kart 64, Super Mario World 64 and the original Sonic the Hedgehog Series.

While TES IV: Oblivion's soundtrack sounds like complete crap if you're listening and playing, but it is quite beautiful when listening to it without the game.

your teacher is killjoy. What i like about that music is the violin solo. The musician who played that surely has put emotions to it..

The legend of zelda is the reason i bought an ocarina :D.

I love this one its the original bf theme :)

http://youtu.be/TgbPfscufoY (http://youtu.be/TgbPfscufoY)

then in a new one its much the same with a more modern feel

http://youtu.be/lnlA2rCHJHY (http://youtu.be/lnlA2rCHJHY)

However the new BF4 and the such have lost the main melody and are not the same and in my opinion now suck  :324

Also bring it back a lil heres another favurite of mine  :543

You guys and girls should check out Red Bull Music Academy's "Diggin' in the Carts (http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com/magazine/diggin-in-the-carts)" documentary series about the origins and MVPs of Japanese video game music. It was released in 6 parts, and finished yesterday so you can watch 'em all back to back now.

Also, a good podcast to subscribe to is the Laser Time Network's "VGMpire (http://www.vgmpire.com/)" podcast, which celebrates all kinds of video game music. Right now they're hosting their third annual "Rocktober" in which they dedicate the entire month of October to a specific game franchise, so this month is all Pokemon.

Usually I like the work of Nobuo Uematsu on Final Fantasy, but I have to admit that Final Fantasy X is far from being its best composition to my opinion (except for some really good tracks).

As for Kingdom Hearts, although I don't know the whole series, the music seems to be nice. Anyway, I usually like Yoko Shimomura's compositions. I particularly like the work she's done on Legend of Mana.

I like the soundtrack of the game "Stuntman" by Reflections (as I hear it, they are now a Ubisoft studio representing them for The Crew). The game came out in September 2002 so it was a game I grew up with. 2 good songs from the "Stuntman" soundtrack are by Overseer and are called Basstrap and Velocity Shift.

Descent 2 had awesome electronic music.  It was REALLY atmospheric for flying around the mines.
Portal and Portal 2 have terrific songs with lyrics.
Metal Gear Solid had some good stuff, too.

I absolutely love Metal Gear Solid: both the game and the soundtracks.  The whole franchise is The Boss!  (Maybe except for Revengeance)

What was wrong with Revengeance?

Manhunt has a fantastic soundtrack. If you're a fan of John Carpenter's soundtracks or dark ambient in general give it a listen even if the game not your thing.

I feel that Revengeance moved away from stealth action to more of a slash-and-hack style of gameplay.  It's just my opinion.  Nothing much.

It was supposed to. You're Raiden, not Snake...also, it was made by PLATINUM. Action is kinda what they do.

That was the whole point of MGR. To break away from stealth so that Metal Gear as a series could expand.

Best video game OSTs in my opinion are as follows (not all-inclusive):

- Xenoblade Chronicles (Wii)
- Trace Memory (DS)
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64, 3DS)
- Silent Hill 2 (PS2, XBOX, PC)
- Silent Hill 3 (PS3, PC)
- Dark Cloud (PS2)
- Monkey Island 2: Anniversary Edition (PC, PS3, 360)
- thatgamecompany Games - flow, Flower, Journey (PS3)
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (PC, 360, PS3)
- The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, 360, PS3)
- Bioshock (PC, 360, PS3)
- Bioshock Infinite (PC, 360, PS3)
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
- Fable: The Lost Chapers (XBOX)
- Final Fantasy III (DS)
- Assassin's Creed II (PC, PS3, 360)
- Mother/Earthbound Beginnings (NES)
- Kingdom Hearts Final Mix (PS2, PS3)
- To the Moon (PC)
- Stronghold (PC)
- Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS)
- Super Smash Bros. series but that's kinda cheating (N64, GCN, Wii, Wii U, 3DS)
- Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver Versions (DS)
- Pokemon Diamond/Pearl/Platinum Versions (DS)
- Pokemon Red/Green/Blue/Yellow (GBC) but that's mostly just nostalgia :)

...to name a few ;)

Come on. OR/AS has to be on that list, simply for Wally and Zinnia. And do not forget Black and White. N's farewell and Alder's encounter theme are some of the best songs in the entire series. And then there is X/Y with Kiseki. What does D/P/P have to offer against that?

Yeah, but as a WHOLE OR/AS doesn't do it for me as an absolute all-time favorite. X/Y is close but it needs to age a bit before I declare it amazing. "Professor Sycamore" and "Friendship Forever Theme (Music Box)" are amazing at least ;0

It is just that I do not really recall any theme from Gen4 as memorable. Gen1 has the whole being the original, being the most-used region and generally being played more than any other game in its favor as far as memorability is concerned. Gen3 has the drought/deluge themes and some amazing pieces of route music. Gen5 really started the amazing character themes. In my opinion, Gen5 stands out as the generation that does characters best. Musically, but also narratively.

Star Fox Assault is one of my favorites too, particularly Star Wolf's Theme. Never played Ocarina of Time through completely but the soundtrack is amazing.

Some of my other favorites are Metal Gear Solid (any of them really), Super Mario Galaxy, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, and Super Mario 64. Also there was a SCUBA diving game called Endless Ocean for the Wii that had an excellent soundtrack.

Like many have said, the Legend of Zelda scoring, are amazing.  I haven't encountered one yet that I didn't love.  The GTA series radio soundtracks, and the Bethesda Fallout radio soundtracks were really cool.  They really widened my appreciation for styles of music I would never have listened to otherwise.  I don't think I would have ever learned an appreciation for 1940's pop music otherwise :happy

Dark Souls is in a realm of its own.  Kind of like Zelda, its very poignant.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bYQrxnXD9zo

The credits of Driver 2 completly blindsided me with "just dropped in".  https://youtu.be/Naf-wVHUCcc?t=1m50s

I think the absolute coolest moment I've ever experienced in game scoring/soundtrack is in Hitman 3 when you walk into a bar in the Rendezvous in Rotterdam, and Immortal by Clutch is playing in the bikers "den".  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-SovbiT2Pk

My favorite game soundtrack is a tossup between Undertale and Final Fantasy XIII-2. Undertale has the staging and poignancy down, but FFXIII-2 has the sheer musical complexity and drive, along with the diversity. They're both a pleasure to listen to.

Another soundtrack that recent PSX news has reminded me of is The Last of Us (Part II coming - hype!!)

* Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie
* Donkey Kong 64
* Rayman series
* Harry Potter video games
* Minecraft
Minecraft and Banjo-Kazooie I can agree with you on. Donkey Kong 64 might have some leeway as it was made during the time composer Grant Kirkhope was composing exclusively for Rare, as BK was. Rayman I haven't enough experience with to form a subjective critique on, but Harry Potter I'm torn on. I don't much care for the music made specifically for the games, but when Travelers Tales were tasked with LEGO-ising it, they used the much more fantastical pieces written for the movies by people like John Williams. That's something I can always commend them for: using every resource from the original material possible for maximum authenticity.

We lived long enough to see the OG Rhythm game become the game for "GODS ONLY"...damn.

Kingdom Hearts is probably one of those games I like more for it's sound design, and less for it's actual narrative. Kind of been Square-Enix thing lately. Yoko Shimomura is pretty amazing at making music that's kind of bouncy/intense/sad/introspective

I do like Nobou Uematsu but since he left Final Fantasy it's hard for me to keep track of his recent works. That and Yasonuri Mitsuda. Dude's a legend inmho. Xenogear's soundtrack? Chrono Cross? Even Chrono Trigger was amazing at the time.

World of Warcraft has some pretty decent music in it too.. at least the later expansions. Don't have any names attached to it, but there's some pretty good stuff in there too.

My favorite soundtrack for a video game was the Red Dead Redemption 2 soundtrack. The sound was so beautiful and set the mood just as much as the graphics and scenery did in each mission. Just listening to the music could tell you what the mission was gonna be like or the mood of the characters at this point or that an epic battle was coming up. The music would really get me into the zone when it came to some missions.

I've been filming Final Mix 1 since every Kingdom Hearts title dropped on Xbox Game Pass and ever since, I remembered why Yoko Shimomura's score was so memorable. As such, I'm glad Square Enix is finally getting together a rhythm game dedicated to her work on the series.
Ezio's return from Assassins Creed was amazing. Its always an epic track.
In regards to the music, the idea that Assassin's Creed died with Desmond has some semblance of truth. It would be too much to want Jesper Kyd to not leave the franchise knowing he works on others like Borderlands. Nevertheless, I did still enjoy what Lorne Balfe and Brian Tyler brought to the Kenway saga.

Yeah, Yoko Shimomura makes great music. I also like her work on Legends of Mana.

Doom 93's soundtrack. When I played doom first time, it left the soundtrack in my mind. Whenever I do something and am bored, good tracks of doom are supreme. Especially At Doom's gate (ofc :D), Kitchen ace and taking names (e1m4), and Hiding the Secrets (e1m9).

Just caught my eye on this thread after siting a rather long topic about Final Fantasy 7 so guess what my answer will be

I actually enjoy orchestrated versions of classic games of this series (not only 7) and a few rock/metal covers too.

The Dark Souls trilogy have my favourite soundtracks, I love the music and how it's used in the games.
The Halo series also has good music, I prefer CE over 2 (at least, the remasters), because I think the music in CE is more fitting to the game

the Final Fantasy Soundtrackts are so good!
All I really know is FF VII, but it's enough for me to compare to the remake and say that Let The Battles Begin has been made so much more epic, it's become my jam.

I dare say Sakurai proved that with the reveal trailer for Sephiroth. After all, as soon as One-Winged Angel started playing, the internet squealed with joy and fear simultaneously

I like some of the ff7 and 8 orchestrated versions and a few rock/ metal covers. Go on YouTube snd search Ferdk final fantasy 9 battle theme. I think he also did the Jenova battle theme on 7

Soundtracks are a big part of why I love fighting games lol. The tekken electronic music, the SF3 rap, the guilty gear rock and metal, its so diverse and ive never seen a fighting game with bad music.

this definitely isn't an unpopular opinion but undertale's soundtrack is fantastic. i think anyone who's interested in video game osts should listen to it, toby fox is a great composer. deltarune too, since it's the kinda-not really sequel to undertale

As much hate as it gets, the FF-XIII soundtrack will always stand out as one of the best ever to me. Prelude to FF-XIII paired with the opening cinematic is straight up beautiful. Not to mention the bangers like The Promise and The Sunleth Waterscape.

I love video game music! The music from the Bioshock series comes to mind, especially Bioshock: Infinite. Also, the music of the Kingdom Hearts series and, of course, the soundtrack of the entire The Legend of Zelda franchise.
