Title: Search by nationality
Post by: cc71 on May 13, 2017, 03:48:19 am
In the Search facility, is there any way to search for a member by nationality?

No, but if you put the country in the search, you will find many who mention it.

Wouldn't the member map also work?

I suppose not everyone would put a pin in the member map though

Also I will take your advice, Danee

The member map is also unreliable. Just looking at it directly you can see that there are pins in the middle of the ocean, one in Antarctica, some above Russia, and even ones above Greenland into the North Pole. If you select those pins, they live in Germany, Arizona, France, or wherever not even remote to the pins.

It's a fun tool, but it would be advised not to use it as a good reference point.

The position of your pin is your own responsibility. The map does not use data from your country or location field.

Well yah, I knew that. It ain't the first member map I've been on. :p Just saying that's it's unreliable as people, if they do use it, don't always put their pin where they actually live.

Maybe on the next Admin announcement email blast there could be a link to the member map and instructions for how people can check/update their member pin to be in their city/country? It would be cool to have this a little more accurate.

As far as I support NOT forcing anyone to share their precise and real location, I think that some of the ridiculous pins should be deleted and it might have been considered as prohibited to post a totally fake pin, f.e. more than 50 km away from the actual residence - I guess that's enough privacy, given the fact we live in times where privacy is... ekhem, questionable? ;)

Adding a feature to search by nationality would be good in my opinion. Of course, it would need to optional as to whether somebody wanted to appear in the results though.

I agree. It's one thing to post a pin at the north pole for a joke but isn't the point of the map to help us find others near us? Could we make it 100 kms though? Trying to guess where you are in outback Australia isn't that easy

How do I get my pin on the Member Map anyway?

It's under profile -> modify profile -> forum profile go to member map and enter a location
