Title: WORLD NAKED BIKE RIDE FOR BRISBANE 2013
Post by: Dario Western on February 16, 2013, 05:16:54 pm
This is an interview that Danna from Nude Muse magazine did with me about my plans for the World Naked Bike Ride in Brisbane next month.

Dario!   What a great interview!  Folks, if you are in Oz, or are one of our residents from Australia, get to Queensland this October!  Big props to Dario!

Thanks Danee!  I had a lot of fun doing the interview, and there could be more in the pipeline where that came from since the webmaster and cameraman David Entz has since told me he is also keen to do some coverage of my own nude group events and get some of his other models to come along to them, several of whom are nudists themselves.

Just waiting to hear back from the Brisbane police and the administrators at QUT Gardens Point with the proposals for the event.  A young couple who came to visit me yesterday told me that the bike path had been closed off due to the floods recently, but I will check it out for myself to see that it's okay to use (hopefully should be if the weather holds up well for the next few weeks at least!).

Hey Dario, in a lot of Nude-Muse interviews, questions about naturism and the naked human body are raised. Do the admins support it or is it more of an "informal" thing?

David is a nudist, and he is also coming to my next Brisbane get together with a few of his models in tow.  He even posted a B&W nude self-portrait photo of himself on his Flickr page recently and said that it was not an easy task for him to do.  I can see why, because artists are the hardest critics of themselves and moreover their work.  But good to see that he got out of his comfort zone and did it for himself.  :)

I noticed your interview has been posted on other websites, one of which drew a comment wondering why the interviewer was nude, but you were not and wondered why.

Hello Ron,

The interview was done in a public place.  Where I live, it is legal for females to be publicly nude, but males have to wear at least a g-string in order to avoid being arrested.  The willful exposure laws here pertain only to the exposure of genitals.

Hope this answers your question.

Interesting.  So whatever women expose are not considered genitals.  Kind of a different twist on things than we have here in the US.  I prefer your version.

I don't know about the law in Wisconsin but it seems that the law in Queensland is the same as it is in the State of Maine, specifying "sexual organs" which, on we women, are internal.  All in all I prefer the situation in Vermont where there is no state law criminalizing simple nudity for either men or women.  I should go try it out this summer.

The important thing to remember in Vermont is that it is legal to be  :423 naked in public  :e4444
but it is illegal to disrobe  :654 in public  :56789

Good interview Dario.  Keep the faith!

Then I guess in Vermont one must disrobe in private before going out in public.

Be careful of where you choose to go nude in Vermont.  It is not all laissez-faire about nudity as you might think: http://www.reuters.com/article/2007/07/18/us-vermont-nude-idUSN1823185120070718 (http://www.reuters.com/article/2007/07/18/us-vermont-nude-idUSN1823185120070718)

I did not know WNBR originated in Canada. Every now and then we hit a home run!
Very good interview Dario!

Actually, I should correct myself on this: the guy who started the WNBR is from Canada, but he was studying at Berkeley University at the time.  His name is Conrad Schmidt.

Close enough we'll chalk that one up to the Doukhabors anyway

Cool we have a celebrity poster. Those rides look like a lot of fun.

I don't think that the Doukhobors were into bicycling but they were keen on nude protest . . . also bombings and arson.   The other thing that I'm sure of is that the current Criminal Code section regarding nudity is the Douk's legacy in this country.  The Douk's have faded away to near extinction but Canadian naturists live with their legacy.

There are about 40000 of them in Canada mostly around here and as I recall the nude protests were their form of civil disobediance as they're pacifists - haven't heard anything about any bombings.

Not saying it didn't happen - just seems out of character.

From the number you quote I assume that you read the first two paras of the wiki article and then stopped.  Read through to the end.

"Today an estimated 20,000–40,000 people of Doukhobor heritage live in Canada, some 4,000 of them claiming "Doukhobor" as their religious affiliation."

"In less than a half a century Sons of Freedom acts of violence and arson rose to 1112 separate events and over $20 million in damages (bill to taxpayers) that included public school bombings and burnings, bombings of Canadian railroad bridges and tracks, the bombing of the Nelson courthouse, and a huge power transmission tower servicing the East Kootenay district resulting in the loss of 1200 jobs."

And that $20 million is in 1920s $$$ so don't forget to apply the inflation factor . . . approx $267 million . . . not a bad score for a bunch of pacifists.

You're right I didn't read the whole thing - I got bored after I found the number I was looking for.

According to Wikipedia it wasn't the Doukhobors in whole but a radical minority that carried out the nude protests and a splinter group from there (extremists - where have I heard that before?) that carried out the bombings.

For some reason people around here don't remember or don't want to talk about the bombings possibly because they occurred so long ago (before the 'purge') whereas the nude protests continued into the 70s.

I guess Lady Godiva  beat us to it and it seems Conrad Schmidt is originally from South Africa but I think nude protest as a concept has a decidedly Canadian feel
