Back in high school, some of my friends and I tried out a run of Dungeons & Dragons. We had some fun with it, but the friend who acted as Dungeon Master (DM) for the campaign was the bossy chick with a superiority complex. She made ridiculous use of her DM authority and turned out to not actually know what she was doing (she had claimed that she had not only played for years, but had DM'd several games in the past).
Our first foray into D&D did not last long. But it was not without fond memories. Recently, while watching an awesome fantasy film at a theatre, we decided to give it another go. Our group of friends has changed over the years. Some people were no longer a part of it (including bossy know-it-all), and there were new friends. From the beginning, it was decided that I would DM the campaign. I set about getting the things I needed: a dice set, the core rulebooks, character sheets, a grid sheet. And then I got busy studying, planning, and crafting.
I have now had the joy of creating my own campaign setting, DMing two campaigns (one meets one day each week, the other another), and of handing the reins of one campaign over to one of the players so I could roll up my own character and play also. I've really enjoyed what we've done so far. Currently, I DM the second campaign which was started, and I play a character in the other campaign which I handed off to a player to take over as DM.
Has anyone else had any experience with D&D or another tabletop roleplaying game?
-
I used to play a lot during high school. I started with AD&D, then D&D. I've played up to the 3.5 version. Some of my friends still play it, but I lost interest.
-
We play the Revised Third Edition (3.5). What was your favorite role to play in an adventuring party, and what class did you choose for that role?
For example, We have a Fighter who is most definitely a tank, and I'm currently playing a Traiteur (a homebrew caster class that's a blend of shaman and cleric) that is the party's primary healer at this point.
-
I'm about to start my first ever game in 3.5 with some mates off another forum :)

I liked to play a Paladin. Kind of curious, most of my friends liked "antiheros" types, and usually I was the only one Lawful Good in the group.
-
I played off and on while in college, but mostly I played White Wolf RPGs. When I played D&D 3.5 (and most recently Pathfinder, which is sorta like 3.5) I normally played Neutral Good, mainly because it was more along the lines own personality. As for class I normally am just a "role player" in essence I play whatever the other people don't wanna play ("No mages in the group? I'm your man") sort of thing.
-
Warhammer was a far better RPG. I was shocked to find that it was discontinued. It was less restrictive about characters and careers and gave a lot more flexibility to the game play. I always liked to roll the worst characters ever. My favourite character was a diseased halfling with a number of mental disorders who started out life as a rat catcher. She later progressed to become a torturer. If you have a particularly low ratings then it's amazing just how problems just seem to sort themselves out. No one needs to kill you and everyone has automatic success in convincing you to join their side.
I also enjoyed Call of Cthulhu.
-
I tried to get into D&D to no real avail during my public schooling but when I got into my group of college friends I was able to indulge almost every week. There were a few of us who were always available and a few more who'd play occasionally, and that's one of the things I miss most about that period of my life, honestly. While I can say in hindsight that D&D (especially 3.5) isn't close to the best system out there and I'm not sure I should recommend it to anyone, I certainly enjoyed my time with it.
-
When I was in London, a flatmate and his friends used to play it way too much. He invited me to join in a couple of times, but I could never get into it.
-
I have only played a little myself. But I am toying with some campaign ideas.
-
Everyone likes 3.5 and not 4.0, I don't see a whole lot of difference. I played 3.5 for a year and then started on 4.0. I like it, it's a little awkward that Fire Elementals or fire doesn't really burn
-
Everyone I've ever played with since 4th came out prefers it over 3.5, but I know my group may not be average. 4th certainly is the better system to introduce someone to, though, as it requires a lot less kludge to make balanced so you can focus your efforts on making it fun.

I think that is what game developers were going for, a system that would be accessible to first time gamers. Unfortunately they have appeared to alienate more "hard core" D&D players, most of the ones I know have gone over to Pathfinder (or still play 3.5) rather than 4th ed.
-
I know many that have gone over to pathfinder. I'm actually getting read to start another game, cthulhu. I am actually writing a paper on D&D and the benefits of teaching it to students - team playing, problem solving. I'm kinda tired of people talking about all the negatives.
-
is anyone playing the D&D Encounters at local gaming shops?
-
While I'm not much of a D&D fan, I did play Magic The Gathering back in high school. Had a killer red (spells) and white (holy magic/protection magic) deck that was near invincible :543
-
i used to play DND but i got kicked out due to low availability, im sour about this, but i forgave them, it was one of the best experiences ive had with a game, which is hard to top
-
I haven't played in a couple years. I was invited to a Skype game this summer that just hasn't seemed to pan out. I'd love to play a few games but the fact that the time committments always seem to be Friday or Saturday just kills it for me.
When I was in college I had several people ask me to join my game, and my answer to most of them was 'yes, so long as it's not agriday or Saturday night. I want a real life, too'. That meant I never got to play :-(
If somebody wanted to start a Tuesday through Thursday game over the 'net I'd be down in a heartbeat.
A few friends and I once had the idea to play a three-DM game. We'd be on a small island so we could actually try some of the shopkeeper rules and also so the players would never go far. We'd rotate DMs and each would also be playing against the others. Think of the band as mercenaries being paid by one of the three warlord DMs each week. However, all three DMs would also be in communication outside the game to ensure it ways always an equal field so we could all have some fun. We put a lot of effort into getting it all set up and ready to play but come the next semester, when it was scheduled to start, we just couldn't work the scheduling.
-
that sounds really hard, i'd have trouble with 2 DM's, it's like having 3 lords to 1 herd of sheep, they'd all want separate things for the sheep and become divided, or end up repeating over and over... sounds like an interesting game though!
-

Well, it is the preferred time for social gatherings, and playing games together is a preferred type of social gathering for many people into this. Social life need not mean party every week.
-
I love RPGs but I have a strong dislike of the D20 system and any RPG based on it.
-

I'm not arguing that, but committing oneself to the same thing every week means you're much less available to do something with other friends. I don't want to feel like I'm letting down people just because I went camping, want to go on a date or have some other social engagement.
I stopped by quite often and played disposable characters but I would have been severely handicapped had I tried to keep up with the group without being at every game.

I'm planning a monthly campaign, this seems more reasonable and manageable.
-
One meeting a month? That would be a very good compromise and would allow a DM plenty of time to do things right!
-
I DM 3.5 ED, when I can. I find, however, people's schedules often slip, and too much of this ends up causing people to lose interest. Typically, I do highly involved, but flexible story lines, and focus upon the role playing rather than the rules, tweaking them as need be, and sometimes adding things so that it will make sense. I find that anything less flexible tends to either end in fire or worse.
-
Im in a role play group that is currently playing a savage worlds campaign. Its a good system but our Gm and his wife are mega serious with it. For me part of role pl is the social aspect. I like to chat with my mates and do a bit of gaming at the same time but as soon as one of us starts to chat we get tolsd off. It kinda makes me want to leave the group.
-
I've DMed about 5 campaigns in total and it was always fucking great. Me and my friends have been doing it forever since we were like 12 haha we try to play about twice a month, we used to do it a lot more but jobs have made it so a lot of my friends can't do it as often. But yeah the game holds a lot of fond memories for me

You probably should either respect the group or leave.
Edit:
To expend on the above, there are various styles of play and various goals and they're all okay as long as you all are on the same page. However, the GM puts more time and energy than you in making it possible and thus, gets to be the arbiter of what is or isn't acceptable behaviour. Of course there's place for discussion but if you don't agree his word is law.
Of course, it's quite likely your viewpoints are incompatible. In that case you leave before wasting your time and his.
But what you do is extremely disrespectful and you should stop.

I usually join the local Wednesday Night Encounters group for D&D. We were running 4th edition, though at the moment we're running the new D&D Play Test.
-
This is how I play Dungeons and Dragons...

-
I've played off and on since high school and I'm trying to get a group together but I'm having problems getting people to commit to coming over and playing.
-
I have my old copy of Advanced D&D 2nd edition. It's like a treasure.I also have my Dark Sun boxes... A lot of hours of fun...
-
can say I have never played D&D, not enough time to really sit down and play it very much
-
Sorry about necroing, but I should not that I am attempting to coral interested players into some Nude Skype RPing. Let me know via posts if any of you all are interested, as well as what systems you'd like to play/run.

Yes this is an OLD thread however prepare for a bit of a revival :laughing
With the UK back in lockdown would anyone be interested in an online D&D group?
-
How experience do you need to be? I have been stuck in London all christmas and while I start studies again soon, I am so bored! Anything to keep busy in these strange and lonely times

I’d be up for running/playing Star Wars. I have the entire collection of Star Wars books from fantasy flight.

Interesting, one I've never played before

I’m currently playing it right now with friends. We are currently playing a ice campaign and so far it’s great. I probably can join another depending on which days. I’m free Monday and Wednesday but I have my other campaign on Monday. Though I can work things out in need be.

I've been playing Table Top Role Playing games like Dungeons & Dragons, and Pathfinder for most of the time I've been in college. I've thoroughly enjoyed it even with some of the groups I didn't like playing with. I've been both a DM and a Player in multiple campaigns. There's just really nothing quite like it.
I've really thought once or twice about trying to run an online game of DnD specifically for nudists to play in (and maybe make it into a podcast if I could get the player's permission), but I really just haven't had the time to dedicate to it unfortunately.

I know what you mean.

I haven't gotten to play yet myself but I absolutely adore world building and think the game looks fantastic. I made a character sheet on dnd beyond and fully intend to start playing the game. I've heard a lot of good stories and a lot of bad ones but that's just the testament of a good creative medium.
-
ive always been interested in it but i don’t know where to even start with it XD

If you ever have questions you can ask me. I've played a bit and do a ton of research.
