Title: Second Life - Naturism in the virtual world.
Post by: Brendarella on May 11, 2017, 01:15:48 pm
Second Life is a massive, online virtual world.  Think "The Sims" but behind each avatar is a real person controlling what they say and do.  Yes, there is a Naturist movement in the virtual world of Second Life.  It gives people an opportunity to try it out in a safe environment and see how they feel without taking the plunge.

In Second Life, I'm in charge of two naturist marinas as well as over 100 privately owned residential islands.  People "live" there and login to spend quality time hanging out with their friends, sailing, flying, or just chatting around a campfire.  Some have been in SL for years, including myself.

There's mountains, forests, oceans, rivers, town and villages to explore.  And you can make your avatar resemble anything you want, although most people try and make them look like their real life counterpart.

It takes a but of time to get used to using the controls but it's totally worth it.

Oh, and did I say, it's all completely free?

Here's a couple of photos I took recently while in the marina.

I've played around with second life a few times, unfortunately the user use the nudity for sex stuff and not real naturism, but it could be nice to "open" an island just for naturists, if anyone is up for it we can try building something nice for IYNO members

We have built this SL naturist estate to follow real naturism rules.  There's a strict set of rules that visitors and residents must follow or they are asked to leave.   So there's no open soliciting or sexual displays. It's all pretty much as you would expect to see it in a real one.   We also have a lot of members of the group who are also members or RL naturist organisations and clubs.

And to say that SL users are "in it for the sex",  well, I've heard it said that naturists are also "in it for the sex", too.  And neither statement is true.  You only get out of SL what you are willing to put in... just like real life.

There are no nude patches.  You can wear anything you want.  Or as little as you want, or just wear nothing at all. You have full control over your wardrobe.

Does anyone have realistic body proportions for their SL people? All the photos posted seem very Barbie and, the the case of the dude, over exaggerated emphasis on muscles and phallus.

Members are free to change their body shape, colour and size to whatever they want.  You can use the free Vitruvian shapes or make it look exactly like think you appear in real life, even down to the faces.   Yes, some people use the opportunity to over-exaggerate their physique with muscles and barbie-doll bodies (and yes, some people choose to larger penises and boobs than they have in real life, too)  BUT it's their choice. There's plenty of tall, short, thin, fat people in SL, too. Even pregnant ones.

YOU decided how you want to look.  And we shouldn't be about critisizing how people appear or even how they WANT to appear.

I tried this briefly before and it had potential but I played it like a video game rather than a life simulation which angered people. I think it'd be weird if everyone had barbie doll anatomy though, if I get it would you be able to talk me through the setup if I get stuck?

@newbie If you need any help figuring things out, I can def help with that. That wasn't the problem. "I had played SL for several years and it just got boring for me. The only reason I still keep my account is because that I have purchased many things in there. At the prime of my SL life, I was an admin for several groups and land security for the biggest dragon sim there was.

You don't have to spend a lot of money - but like with most things in life, money makes things better.

So far, I've spent about $50 on custom skins, clothes, shapes, hair, gestures, and accessories.  I wouldn't lay out that kind of money routinely tho.  But I don't mind spending a little to get my avatar the way I want it.

But, a lot of what I have can be earned in the game (or found) but spending money is easier and faster.  I've looked into land and housing or renting an apartment but all of that is a monthly fee or would require my character to work.  That's too much like real life so I'll just let her evaporate at the end of her adventures.

None of SL is a substitute for real life but to me, it's a bit like my doll collection.  I get dolls, customize them, dress them in all kinds of clothing, make their hair pretty, and sit them on a shelf to look at them.  What purpose does that serve?  None, really.  It's a complete waste of time other than the fact that I enjoy doing it.  A little piece of my heart goes into my dolls and my online avatars.

And SL is WAY cheaper than dolls and actual doll clothes!

ok. you convinced me i'm going to give it a try (when i have some spare time) - then we'll see if it's something for me  :cheesy:

OP here, I had no idea that there were any replies on this thread. Doesn't this system tell you when someone respond to a comment? Or are you supposed to check every day to see is someone has said something?

In response to some of the more positive comments, I can say that I will help anyone who wants help either here or in-world.

I have met many real life naturists in Second Life and they've told me that they get a lot from living a virtual naturist lifestyle. Sometimes, someone tells me aren't able to experience real naturism because they are disabled or embarrassed or that they still haven't got up the courage to try it out for real.

Second Life naturism isn't meant to replace real life naturism.  Nor is it a substitute. It's just another way for people to express their naturist feelings

If you click on Profile and goto Account Settings you can look in the notifications portion and check the box if you want notifications sent to you. If you routinely check it but don't want any notifications sent to you then you just have to click "Show Unread posts since last visit" or "show new replies to your posts" up at that top. Unless viewing daily or bi-daily, these can start to get quite a few post in them.

It's also encouraged to make yourself more known and to post outside of just one topic as well.

Personally, I am a big fan of View the most recent posts on the forum (https://internationalyn.org/forum/index.php?action=recent), since it shows the body of the post and does not reset if you leave it in the background for too long. You can find it at the bottom of the front page.

Is the nudity part of the base game or does it require a third party mod?

User-generated content is a big part of the game and drives the in-game economy. Degrees of freedom are pretty large, so nude content is easily encountered.

No mods required.  You can wear anything you want.  Or as little as you want, or just wear nothing at all. You have full control over your wardrobe.

Geographical areas are designated as General, Mature and Adult. You can set your viewer to the appropriate level so you as you explore, you only encounter suitable stuff.

For example, if you went into a naturist resort in Second Life, you may encounter naked people. But if you go to a public outdoor concert, on a sim with a classification of General, you won't.

Some people have no real opportunity to experience naturism.
Some people don't feel confident enough to plunge in to a naturist experience.
Some people may have have strict parents or they live in a community or even a religion that misunderstands and discourages such a practice as naturism.
Some people may have familiy responsibilities that they consider hinders their desire to try naturism.
Some people may work in areas such as the entertainment industry or appear in the public eye.
Some people may be severely disabled or bed-ridden and their only escape to naturism is by means of virtual reality.

These are a few examples I just thought of, I'm sure there are plenty more.

Of course, the real world experience will always be superior to any virtual experience, but that doesn't invalidate the virtual one. Many people enjoy both worlds.

if you're lucky enough to be able to participate in real life naturism, please allow those that aren't so lucky to enjoy some aspects of it.

Ann, if you’re looking for a place where you can be naked in the cyber world without any worries then Second Live is exactly where that can happen. That’s what it is that is all about!

If you want to try it out it’s very easy and it’s free.   https://secondlife.com

The only problem is that you have to learn how to control what you see on the screen using your mouse and keyboard. And it only really works on a laptop or a desktop computer.   You won’t be able to run this on your smartphone.

But there are real genuine naturist groups and places in there for everyone to enjoy.

If you have a half-decent laptop and a reasonable internet connection, the rest is free.  You can visit the website and download the Second Life viewer, which is the "window" through which you interact with the virtual world...  And off you go. From then on, it's just fun and practice.

Then what are you waiting for?
If you have a half-decent laptop and a reasonable internet connection, the rest is free.  You can visit the website and download the Second Life viewer, which is the "window" through which you interact with the virtual world...  And off you go. From then on, it's just fun and practice.
