Title: Nude Gyms
Post by: Statik on May 26, 2018, 10:47:40 pm
So are nude gyms a thing?  Around the beginning of the year I started getting into the whole gym thing (I'm big, and trying to work on that, and strangely naturism helps me feel better about my size) and kind of thought that this would be the ideal thing to be doing nude.  I mean, as we probably all know, it's in the meaning of the word 'gym.'

It seems like it would be a lot more comfortable for a lot of things.  Maybe some practical, minimalistic textiles for some of the more aerobic activities to keep things in place a little bit, but all in all, i get the feeling that most of the people in my gym would rather be nude (like those shirts that are...not really much of a shirt).  Especially with the obsession of 'tech fabrics' to keep the body dry, it all seems so counterproductive.

I mean it would certainly make the gym bag lighter too!

There is areas that might do nude yoga, especially in England, or that have a nude swimming area.

But in the US, good luck finding something like that. Like I said, maybe the yoga classes and BIG maybe on the swimming pool, but that'd be about a close as you could get. We're all sticklers over here after all, haha.

I dont like the idea. I go to the gym and I hate to find a machine all full of sweat. Some clothing at least keeps a little bit of sweat from spilling all over. On the other hand I may not require clothes but I may require a huge towel to cover the machine seats. That is quite unpractical. Also, I believe that gym is one of those situations where some support is needed, at least for men!

This is true, and I did sort of consider that.  Though I would think that considerate cleaning practices could alleviate that problem.  Like the gym I go to has little spray bottle and paper towel stations *everywhere* and an understanding that you clean down any piece of equipment after use.  I imagine a similar or better policy could be a norm in a nude (or maybe near nude or something) gym environment.

But yeah, some things (ahem!  treadmills) benefit from the structure of clothing.

I have mixed feelings about this.

I can definitely see the possibility of someone not cleaning their machine and leaving sweat and body hair behind. There's nothing wrong with those things, but i didn't ask for them.

On the other hand, i hate having to constantly pull my boxers down under my shorts or the feeling of the sweaty collar around my neck.

I don't think so. After all (according to evolutionary biologists), humans are among the best long distance runners and have been so before the invention of clothing. Indeed our ancestors probably ran faster than we do in the nude on a regular basis. Food for thought.

Clothes or not the gym equipment is always dirty/sweaty after someone uses it, gyms typically require (though it isn't enforced) to bring towels to rest your head/body against the machines. A nude gym would simply have to make it mandatory, but I'm fairly certain nudists in general would upkeep the rule more so than in your standard gym. I always clean the equipment before and after using it with the spray/papertowels they provide at gyms. It's the gym, If you're concerned about germs you're in the wrong place.

This. I really hate it when I go on a machine and there is sweat on it. Clean that shit.
But I do hate the way clothes sometimes feel or get in the way. I would especially like to naked and there is a mirror to see both my muscles and form when working out thou

Oooh!  Great point!  However, I do wonder how they didn't have issues with this though...

There would need to be a change in gym culture - but I guess a naturist would be more inclined to notice this kind of thing and act in accordance. Right?

I think that it is more an exercise in ignoring the awkwardness. But, I am effectively a closet nudist (though everyone knows), so I wouldn't know for sure. It would be cool to set up a chain of nudist gyms. The trick would be to try and simply make it clothing neutral. I would imagine having equipment located in the locker room's and co-ed locker rooms.

Though off-topic, I would like to point out that we need better media coverage. Unfortunately, many of our members (such as my low conscientious self) are too free-spirited to hold down and get a media project off the ground (I can barely get my assignments done on time, lol). But that would be what we need. Perhaps a GoFundMe or Kickstarter for such a Gym and/or media project?

I think there would be health benefits to a nude gym. The natural body is designed to workout naturally to strengthen muscles and ligaments that rely on clothes for support.

True dat but at least here in the states, I imagine there aren't many naturists going to my gym. It'd be a little rough getting everyone on board.

It could work, but I could also see problems. Not having to deal with sweaty clothes would be nice, but those same clothes soak up a lot of the sweat. This issue could be helped by having people lay down towels and clean off the equipment after they use it, but if people forget to it would be pretty unpleasant.

Here in Germany, to my knowledge it is standard to prescribe the use of towels on the machines. Clothes hold the sweat only partially, shorts and tank tops will always allow to sweat on the seats, and even fully clothed users can leave sweat if they get wet enough. Therefore, naked workout would not really be a problem of hygiene.

But I doubt there will be such an offer, simply lack of demand. Even many of "us", who consider themselves as naturists or at least as interested in nude recreation, are hesitant and have a feeling of awkwardness when they imagine such a setting. Only naturist associations may perhaps think about this. In Berlin, there seems to be a very active association with many offers for sport activities, if they had the necessary financial resources, perhaps they would think about establishing a gym, but this is probably way too expensive for a non commercial association.

I have read that there is a nude yoga class in LA. If that helps anyone but I’m not all that interested into yoga.

I think nude yoga is catching on fairly rapidly as of late. The club I'm part of hosts one every few weeks or so during the winter season. I've never joined it but it seems rather popular and draws a crowd each time they host it.

As for a nude gym... I would be more willing to join a gym if they offered a nude session. I do agree with everyone else in this thread that hygiene and courtesy are priorities. Which brings me up to my next point: isn't it a major naturist etiquette to always have a towel in hand and always sit on towels?

Oh definitely it is.  However, I could also see a nude gym getting a lot of non-naturists interested in joining.  As in, they are new to it, have no connections or anything with naturists, and may not be aware of things like that.  Of course, then I could see such a gym as being a great learning experience AND reinforcing hygiene.

But then again, people are still vehemently opposed to the idea of showering naked after swimming at public pools, and people have (unsuccessfully) lobbied to ban it outright for some weird reason.

I think a logical step to naturalize nudity in a gym environment for the non-nudist population would be offering segregated gender sessions as a complementary option.

One of the the locker rooms in my university had a few pieces of equipment and it wasn't completely out of the ordinary to see people working out nude. I even did it a few times. But I definitely had a towel to cover the seats and such.

I feel like this would be a great way to ease people in to it. Maybe post a sign that says that some towel or protective layer is needed. Then gradually move to a clothing-optional night with months of advertisement in advance so that nobody is caught off guard.

I actually suggested a nude swim night at the pool there once in the school paper. I never got any feedback except for my mother's glare lol

:laughing maybe she should be one of the first ones convinced!

But I am curious as to how that would work. Would you have to rent out the pool as a private member or a public group? Would you have to pay a deposit? I think it could definitely be an option up here.

Well, I don't know about the school part, but our club regularly rent out pools for swim events. Around these parts, it's around 200 for special pools and 100 for regular ones per day.

Side-note: I feel that if people were able to work out nude, we would be better able to see how our muscles work and what we can do to improve exercising them. I know that I can flex certain muscles (the few that aren't covered in flab) but I'd be curious to see how the muscles look when I'm actually working out.

I would love a nude gym. Not having to deal with hot, sweaty clothes. My skin gets so irritated when I work out becouse of the sweaty clothes rubbing. Being nude would eliminate that situation for me. Also being nude gives you greater range of motion compared to when you are clothed.

I would love a designated section for training with heavier free weights, powerlifting, just to have a safe place where people don't wander in. But lots of free weights in general. I have always had problems finding well-behaving clothes for squatting, more than once the seams break.

I much prefer working out naked, which I do at home all the time (for instance, just finished a bodyweight session). I also go to the gym (textile, of course),but the gym as it is currently populated would be interesting to say the least. The meat heads who populate the free weight section are a culture of their own. But the aerobics classes and aerobic machine sections could be a lot of fun. Not at all worried about the germs-- as a previous poster mentioned, the gym is covered in germs- whether you are clothed or not! Just clean yourself well when you leave!
