What are you listening to? - With a twist!
« on: September 06, 2010, 05:11:23 pm »
This thread is just like the other thread of the same name with a small difference. You can only post music that was made by people of the same cultural group you associate with. And if you want to be a smartass and say that this group is "humanity", please go post in the other thread.

I'm curious to see what kind of diversity this thread will produce.

First song was never popular which is too bad because I think it's funny. It's about the language conflict in Quebec. And yes, the singer is Jon Lajoie which you might have seen on Youtube.

Fluid Rouge- Anglophone Quebecois

The second one on the other hand was extremely popular:

Dobacaracol - Étrange

Actually, I meant music made by people you share a culture with outside of music. I could have said by nationality but culture often doesn't quite match national boundaries.Or people might live a different country from where they were born and identify more with the culture there.

so in other words, i am white English, so i should only post music by white English artists?

no disrespect meant, Dan, but this is topic which makes no sense to me.

maybe it makes sense to you, if you are from Quebec and wanted to draw attention to artists from Quebec who make music about being from Quebec, but I am not even 100% certain which country (or, alright, "cultural group") many of the artists in my music collection belong to.

i could post a bunch of English punk but if i wanted to do that i would just start a topic called "English punk".  Why didn't you just start a thread about the music scene in Quebec and tell us more about the artists that speak to you and your "cultural group" instead?

Actually, I was curious about what people in Belgium, Italy and so on produced. I'm also sure many states of the US have some music that is typical to them. I didn't start a thread about Quebec because I didn't intend it to be about Quebec. And it's not about what our standard music collection either. Post some English punk if you wish.

then why the convoluted premise?

why not simply say "these are artists who epitomise my cultural group - i'd be interested to see examples of artists who you think epitomise your country or cultural group"?

to that end:

two English punk bands, more than a generation apart, but both white, working class youths making something of a statement about life in London (where I don't live but I would have a job finding artisits who epitomise my own city) as it is to them.

I don't believe much in epitomes, every culture is varied. Beside, the first video I post isn't very epitomic since the song never turned popular.

If I was a Brit, I'd post some Monty Python, those guys are awesome.

Edit: Cool songs by the way, I love punk.

These are the original lyrics to an old traditional Scottish song that some American popularised with different lyrics:

well, if we are going to split hairs over the choice of wording, i am sure there are other words which could be used in place of "epitomise" which are less likely to conflict with your personal philosophy.  Embody, perhaps?  Represent?  Demonstrate?

my point still stand though - your topic premise is overly complicated and suggests that you have expectations about what should and shouldn't be included in the topic, without making it clear to anyone else what those expectations are.

We have to post music here that represents the culture in our country, in my case the Belgian culture. Correct?

Another traditional Scottish song that others shamefully stole and made their own  :345678

Either represent Belgians or is made by Belgians. I'm not super strict on how large cultures go, it's up to you to decide. I won't get into whether Scotts share the same culture as the rest of UK or not for instance. I love traditional Scott songs though, so keep em coming Stu.

You might post old traditional stuff or new stuff, it's all good.

For Wolfboy, a song by Jean Leloup (which he translates to John TheWolf when he sings in English):
